Considering a Ubiquiti EdgeRouter X
« on: March 05, 2018, 07:52:10 PM »

[Moderator note: This topic has been split off from the "Recommended replacement for Draytek 2860 router" thread.]

Does anyone have experience with the EdgeRouter X?

For the money it seems too good to be true. I notice it uses a mediatek chipset instead of the Cavium ones used across the rest of the line, does this carry some performance penalty or other issue? On the site they seem to list the fast packet per second rates of other routers but leave it off the X, does this suggest it doesnt have the same performance?

Looking at one to replace a BT HH5a running LEDE, mostly just to play with something new but I guess the slow web interface and high CPU load when running the SQM QoS would be what I told myself were the reasons ::)

edit: ty b*cat, sorry for the OT in other thread

Only the ERlite-3 and ERpoe-5 can deliver 1 million packets per second, not the ER-X.

Oh ok, so the X is considered a weaker device?

I found this on the ubiquiti forums about QoS performance:
Quote
ERLite-3 and ERPoe-5: below 60 Mbps most likely will work, above 200 Mbps most likely will not work.
ER-8: below 160 Mbps most likely will work, above 450 Mbps most likely will not work.
ERPro-8: below 200 Mbps most likely will work, above 550 Mbps most likely will not work.
ER-X and ER-X-SFP: below 100 Mbps most likely will work, above 250 Mbps most likely will not work.

Seems to suggest the X's processors is at least faster at QoS stuff. Read some other things that I dont fully understand where people talk about QoS operations not having hardware acceleration (offload?), so maybe thats the difference  ???

I'd wait a few weeks for the new Edgerouter 4 which has a lot more performance for not much more money. That is what I'd buy if my existing ER dies on me....

I run a ERPoe-5 and could only manage 45mbit/s with smart queue enabled. I get line rate without QoS enabled...

"for not much money" but compared to an ERPoe-5...The ER-4 price is $199, it is more expensive than an ERlite-3 @$99. But i agree, compared to an ERPoe-5, $24 more for 2x more power it worth it.

No PoE though :)

But yeah, looks like the new ER-4 and the ER-6P both pack quite a punch.

i read that the ERP-4 and 6 don't have a switch, all ports are routed so unless you have many subnets in your local network it could be more annoying than helpful. Creating a software bridge will also kill the performance.

Lack of switch (or PoE) not an issue for me as I run a trunk to a 24-port managed switch (IoT / home networks) and a 8-port toughswitch (PoE AP/VOIP/CCTV devices).

But I can see it being an issue for many.

Yeah, I just use a managed switch (EdgeSwitch 16 150W) plugged in to the EdgeRouter Pro 8. There are unmanaged switches which are cheap anyway, so is hardly an issue.

I have an ERX, not sure what I can tell you. Works fine on 40MHz & 80MHz services via HG612, no QoS used but hardware offload enabled for IPv4 NAT, & IPv6 provided by A&A. No apparent throughput bottleneck or 'web IF slowness'. Haven't tried it on any faster service though. Powered via PoE from managed switch.

For the price I think it's a good buy.
