How to watch Freesat 4K with your 1080p satellite box ...
« on: January 28, 2018, 05:35:06 PM »

If you have a an older satellite receiver that was designed to display 1080p HD max there may be a way to watch full resolution 4K Freesat - I have a VU+ Solo 2 (running OpenViX), you can log into the box and stream any channel. While my Solo will only relay the sound of the Astra/Freesat 4K channel, with no picture, to my 4K TV - if I stream the 4K channel to my MPC-HC media player on my Windows desktop I get full video and audio.

So if your satellite box enables streaming try streaming 4K to the MPC-HC player(MPC uses hardware acceleration, VLC tends to jam) and see what happens. :)

I don’t understand why these satellites are still needed, because the Internet has absolutely everything in the public domain, for example, it’s better to buy a TV box for a TV, such as this <link removed>, and watch everything you want in excellent quality, it is very convenient!

Probably because you can get a satellite signal almost anywhere.

I know a dozen people who's broadband isn't fast enough to stream 1080P.

The mag box linked above would be pretty useless in these circumstances.

I'm not aware of any legal IPTV offering that cover all the terrestrial offerings either.

Its also far more reliable.  You don't get the issues Amazon had watching live sports if its from satellite, it takes really extreme weather to kill it.

Fortunately, I don't watch sports.  :P

I don’t have satellite, only Freeview.  But among the advantages of Freeview that I would imagine also apply to Freesat etc...

You can make your own recordings and keep them as long as you like.   I’ve even got some favourite BBC progs, like the 2012 Olympic opening ceremony, burned to BD-R.

You can skip the adverts on commercial channels (by recording them first).

You don’t need to think up passwords and create ‘accounts’ for each provider, with reams and reams of T&C that nobody ever reads, but should.
