My freeview hd channels have developed a sound problem
« on: January 28, 2018, 01:40:51 PM »

I have a Sony Bravia KD-43XE8004 tv and put it on a hd channel. I watched for 10 minutes before muting it and going downstairs for some breakfast.

I came back upstairs after 30 minutes, unmuted it and now I hear sound interference, which sounds a little like an old school alarm going off. I can hear the proper audio in the background. This happens on ALL hd channels. If I change to a non-HD channel its ok. If I put my ps4 on its ok.

I've got the latest firmware installed. I thought it might have been youview but I turned youview off and the sound problem was still there. I went to another hd sony tv in the house, an older tv, and that can hear the hd channels perfectly.

I can't tell what app was updated when. It's frustrating. I'll give it a few days before I put in some complaint to sony. I'm not a fan of these overly technical tv's adding things on we don't want, and then when a problem arises its difficult to diagnose.

Switch it off then back on again.....

1) Switch off at the wall
2) Press power (physical button if possible) on, (ensure all power drained)
3) Switch back on at the wall
4) Power on

These devices are getting more like PC's and need a complete power off then back on not just a glorified stand-by.

Have you tried re-tuning it as they are mucking about with the muxes on some transmitters at present as they prepare for the 700Mhz clearance.

I hate technology sometimes :) It's back working again.

I just switched it back on to an HD channel and low and behold its back working normally. No interference or anything. I tried turning it on and off. Switching youview on and off (and it made me retune when I turned it back on). Checked the firmware etc. Nothing made a difference. It's surprised me that its back working.

Very strange.

I had made a video earlier of what it sounded like. Here is it;

I'll give it 24 hours, so tomorrow morning then I'm going to contact sony to see what they say about it.

I ended up returning the tv to Amazon, though they are still sitting on my money before refunding it.

But it only gets better! I bought an LG 43UJ670V tv as a replacement while that process was going on. I opened the box (noticed there was some small damage on the box). Setup the TV, everything physically looked ok. Turned it on and there is a distorted smash appearance on the screen and apart from other odd distortions nothing happens. So I'm having to send that one back too!  :(

Does anyone have any better recommendations than Amazon for buying TV's? I've looked at PC World and though its a little higher price I can go in to the store there physically.

I wish Amazon would start using properly delivery companies to deliver high value items. The Sony delivery guy was someone in his own car, and the guy who delivered the LG today was someone who was in an old van.

John Lewis or Richer Sounds.
Both will price match any physical store (Not online only retailers).

John Lewis give a FREE 5 year warranty for all TVs.
Richer Sounds give a FREE 6 year warranty for all TVs (requires free VIP registration).

I would never buy an expensive TV from any other retailer.
Why would you pay Currys £500 for a TV with 1 year warranty if you can get the same tv for the same price with a 5 or 6 year warranty.
In my experience both stores give better customer service too.

^^^
I'd also recommend John Lewis. A few years ago I received a price match of £500 against the price of a TV being sold cheaper elsewhere. Just recently the same with a video camera, £70 refund. I've never had to utilise the guarantee,  :fingers: but have had no issues returning faulty items for refund or exchange.

Thanks John and Vic, I never thought of John Lewis.

I'll definately check them out, and also Richer Sounds.

At the moment ive dragged out my old 20inch sony bravia I bought about 10 years ago and its started up perfectly. It's good to have some kind of tv. Night time was beginning to feel like a prison cell with my own thoughts lol
