Having issues with my VMG1312-B10A in bridge mode

Hello, my Sky Fibre was activated yesterday and I managed to configure the 1312-B10A in bridge mode thanks to http://www.kitz.co.uk/routers/zyxel_VMG8324-B10A_bridge.htm

The modem is attached to a Netgear R7000 running DD-WRT (Kong mod).

So far so good, BUT if I connect a second LAN cable from the modem to the router (as I want to access the modem GUI from time to time) then the problems start: basically after around 10 minutes I connect that cable, all the wireless & wired devices lose Internet connectivity, also the LAN stops working and the only way to back things working is to disconnect that second cable and waiting for about 5 minutes :shrug2: :hmm: :help:

Any suggestions? I've attached a few screenshots of the modem settings.

The ZyXEL IP address is 192.168.0.100, the R7000 IP address is 192.168.0.1 and the DHCP setting is from 192.168.0.2 to 192.168.0.50

Did you complete point 5 from the tutorial correctly?
To me is sounds like you potentially have two devices either trying to assign DHCP, or its getting stuck in an infinite loop and essentially initiating a DOS on your own network.

Can it be related to the option IGMP Snooping enabled?

They are both in the same subnet :-X.....you need to change the  ZyXEL IP address  to perhaps....192.168.100.100

They are supposed to be.


As the OP is running DD-WRT it should be possible to configure the Zyxel to access stats over 1 cable.
It's done by creating a static route on the Netgear and accessing the Zyxel by 192.168.2.1 (the default ip of the bridge).

Chrysalis has a guide for a Billion device which also works with ZyXELs.
I think it's linked to on the Zyxel Bridging guide but I'm on my phone right now.

O no they are not...I was hoping that the OP would investigate further and work the single LAN cable out, did not have time to go into the ddwrt route to modem stuff.

I have gone back to using 2 LAN cables because when the WAN is down the route to the modem is removed.

If you could advise me how to do that, it would be very useful as well !

I am quite a newbie when it comes to networking, and the guide I referred to at the beginning of my post it's not actually working for me... unless of course, that guide implies other settings which again a newbie cannot be aware of...

This may help. My Zyxel i access the gui on 192.168.1.1. My Asus router on 192.168.1.254 I used these guides. (2 cable solution)  http://www.kitz.co.uk/routers/zyxel_VMG8324-B10A_bridge.htm & https://support.zen.co.uk/kb/Knowledgebase/ZyXEL-VMG1312-VMG8924-Bridge-Mode

No, you shouldn't.
Almost everyone who uses a Zyxel in bridge mode has followed this guide exactly and theirs works.
Configure VMG8324 access from the LAN to get line stats

We now need to segregate the WAN traffic from LAN traffic otherwise the LAN ports wont be useable, to do this we need to create a new interface group for the bridge.
The bridging group has to be the new (not default) group because only the default group has access to the gui/telnet which we need to access stats from the LAN.

From : Network Settings > Interface Group
           Broadband > WAN Interface :

Click Add New Interface Group which will open a new window.  add new interface group

Group Name:  Bridge
WAN Interfaces used: PTM type > VDSL/ppp1.1
Available LAN Interfaces:  Click LAN1 and move it to the Grouped LAN Interfaces

Click Apply.

Do not know if Chyslysis was correct or what this part of the webpage is on about.....I have never added another route/interface group on any modem; this has to be done on the router.
That's exactly what he suggests. He's using an Asus RT-AC66U in his example.

I followed the guide exactly missing the last step "Configure VMG8324 access from the LAN to get line stats" as default on mine had all of the interfaces already.

So assuming that guide is 100% correct, I really don't understand what I am doing wrong... I will try to update the firmware to the latest version 1.00(AAJZ.14)C0

Would it make sense to buy an Openreach ECI 1B modem (I can get one of those on eBay for £15) ? Would I get more stability and/or sync speed (I am on a ECI cabinet) ? Or a Vigor 130 perhaps ?
