NICC Open Day 2017
« on: December 17, 2017, 02:47:35 PM »

It seems NICC had another of their annual open days back in November.

The presentations usually give a flavour for what the techie talking heads have been covering, giving us an idea where changes might come in the next few years.

On DSL, the one area being covered seems to be overlap between VDSL2 and G.Fast spectrum, and a variety of schemes to allow more spectrum for G.Fast. A proper report is due out in early 2018 (ND1520), which will direct what kind of changes need to feed into the ANFP. The presentation shows that the gains will be greatest on the G.Fast nodes that aren't colocated with the VDSL2 cabinet, in some cases offering up to 50Mbps improvement.

No mention of LR-VDSL, or the coming change to the VDSL2 specs.

On voice, there is a focus on "All IP". This seems to be the name now being used as a catchall term for putting voice into VoIP, changing the underlying Openreach product from voice-based (with data add-on) to data-based (aka SOGEA), and allowing for the gradual abandonment of the PSTN.

There's ongoing attention to SIP too.

Thank you for that synopsis. You will, hopefully, be able to deliver further "slimmed down" updates as the information becomes available.  :)
