DSLStats and catch-up
« on: December 01, 2017, 08:25:18 PM »

I have watched Coastal Railways on All4's Player, and was conscious of several gaps in the audio.
Using catch up offerings such gaps have not struck me before, but most watching has been via IPlayer with substitles, so I may not have been that aware.

Question is, whether collection of data for DSLStats would have effect on catch-up playback.

OT grrr! Not only does All4 not supply subtitles, but they force you to sit through all the ads.

Collecting the stats uses a small amount of the modem's CPU power, and some memory, so if it's a low powered device I guess processing the catch-up video might need all the power it has. But I'm not really convinced by that. You could pause or stop DSLstats and see if the catch-up program still suffers from gaps.

I'll do just that, and let you know. Which are you thinking of by low power device?

I'm talking about the CPU power and memory capacity of the modem.

Thank you. :) Mine's a Billion 8800NL R1.

Eric, I don't want you to bother replying; you're so busy, so, someone, where is CPU power and the modem memory data to be found. It's just my useless curiosity, so please ignore me, if you wish.  :D

Why don't you just see if there is a blip when DSLstats samples - it says Sampling in red at the top when doing so and will repeat at the same time in seconds each minute or whatever you have the sample rate set to...

Monitoring both TV and DSLStats at same time is not possible. However I did watch a good part of program on catch-up, and I wasn't conscious of the problem this time.
Only difference is that now the beloved is out. ;)

??? You don't need to monitor both at the same time - just sit at the TV or whatever and glance at a watch/clock/timepiece or whatever so you know when to look up at the TV or whatever or some combination of actions along those lines that matches the time you previously noted on DSLstats wherever that may be located...

I've no idea if you could do something similar with the Billion 8800NL R1.

Tony! As I watched almost two chunks between ads with concentration and no disturbances, and there were no glitches, neither sound nor vision, I've concluded the first viewing was an anomaly.

Take a look at the output I obtained and then ask yourself the question: If you could obtain a similar sort of output from your Billion device, would it be of any use to you?

I suspect the answer will be no, so perhaps it is best not to be too concerned as to how you could obtain such information.  ;)
