Problem With an HG612 and an Asus DSL-AC68U
« on: October 07, 2017, 10:45:33 AM »

[Moderator note: This post and those following have been split off to create a new topic. We don't charge for starting a new thread!  ;)  ]

Hey

I'm having trouble talking to my HG612. I didnt want to make a new thread on the matter as I'm most likely being an idiot.

- I'm using it with a DSL-AC68u in router only mode

- I've successfully flashed it.

- I accessed the GUI when plugged straight into my PC, dissabled QOS

- I then plugged my PC back into my router and plugged my modems wan port into my routers wan port, and the modems LAN2 into a spare lan port of the router

- I tried to go to 192.168.1.1 but that just takes my to my router log in page

- I changed my routers ip to 192.168.2.1

- I tried again to access 192.168.1.1 but it takes my to a page that basically says that used to the routers IP but isnt now, please put the new IP in to log into router

- I tried to telnet the modem, but no response

- I changed the routers IP back to 192.168.1.1

- I plugged the modem straight into the PC again, logged into the GUI and changed the modems IP to 192.168.2.1

- I lost all internet. I did some googling, and found some settings for the router under the wan IP, subnet etc that brought it back. No idea what I actually changed tbh.

- I tried to access 192.168.2.1 but agian, it came up with the page saying thats the old IP for the router. Tried to telenet both 192.168.1.1 and 192.168.2.1, but no luck

So thats where I'm at. I'm taking a break from messing with it ATM. I getting 75 down and 18.8 up according to speedtest.net and I'm pinging the BBC at 11ms, so I dont really NEED the line stats, but I'd like to see them anyway...

Any ideas?

Next I was going to try setting the IP of the modem to one the router has never used, but I'm not hopeful its going to work... Am I missing something basic?

Try setting your modem to 192.168.1.1 and router to 192.168.1.2 that way they are both on the same subnet, IE 192.168.1.X

Hello.   (While I was typing this, Ronski posted. I thought I would post anyway,
because I say a little more that may be helpful).

The "normal" thing to do is set your router up something like this:

inet addr:192.168.1.254  Bcast:192.168.1.255  Mask:255.255.255.0

Without any fiddling, the HG612 will occupy 192.168.1.1 (it might be worth setting that statically
in the routers dhcp settings).

Then it Should Just Work, although there might be various things cached in the browser you are using,
or elsewhere which you should somehow flush.  Check you can ping the modem at 192.168.1.1
and the router at 192.168.1.254. You should be able to telnet or ssh into both.

I believe there is some more "elegant" way to organise things, that you can find somewhere on kitz the kitz site,
involving setting up both 192.168.1.* and 192.168.2.* , but my memory and searching foo are not great.
If I were you, I would go for the inelegant, "normal" 192.168.1.* setup, at least to begin with.
[EDIT] Regarding "elegance", some links are at the bottom of this page: http://www.kitz.co.uk/routers/hg612unlock.htm.
Another page that seemed to address a similar point (and put the word "elegance" into my head) is here: https://support.aa.net.uk/Router_-_EchoLife_HG612. I've not tried "one wire" myself.

Try not to reboot your modem too often while you are fiddling about. Ideally, when you power it down or
disconnect the vdsl cable, leave it so for at least 30 minutes.  (I'm not sure, but similarly, when it's
synced, leave it so for at least 30 minutes.) Otherwise DLM may kick in soon, and start to damage your crispy
new speed test results.

HTH, some.

Thanks for the help guys

I'll have a play in the next few days, I'm sure I'll get it figured out.
