Using DSL-AC68U with ECI Modem
« on: September 28, 2017, 09:22:40 PM »

After running into problems with my new DSL-AC68U that I posted here: http://forum.kitz.co.uk/index.php?topic=20358.msg355362#msg355362. I took some advice trying the router with my ECI modem that I was originally using with my BT HH4. I am on bt infinity 2.

I believe to have tried everything and not had any luck getting DSL or internet lights working using:

Dual wan > Primary WAN - Ethernet WAN using port 4 (tried port 3 aswell just incase)

and under internet connection tab trying PPPoE which I believe is the right set up, but also tried auto IP just to rule things out.

Using the usual bthomehub@btbroadband.com with BT password, 802.1Q enabled, Vlan 101.

Cable set up: Master socket > adsl cable > ECI modem > ethernet cable > asus router lan port 4 (set in the UI) > then port 1 to my PC

Reading other peoples posts using same set up this looked like all I needed to do, but I have had no luck. I am hoping its something really stupid I have missed. I have ruled out dodgy adsl cable going from master socket to ECI Modem using the cable I originally used when I had the HH4, and a couple of spares. I also tried a couple of ethernet cables with no luck.

Any help. Starting to go crackers after the amount of time I have spent trying to get it working today.
I am currently back using the built in modem which is fine other than the usual issues people talk about with the dsl-ac68u.

---------------------------

Solved thanks for the help.

It seems leaving the VLAN setting out worked, and setting the 802.1Q category that vlan-id is in to disabled.

As far as I know, no need for these on the router, just on the ECI modem (should be set automatically).

What lights are green on the ECI?

ECI has green for Power, DSL, and Lan 1

Asus router had lights on Lan 4 (set for ethernet wan) lan1 (my pc) and then just the wifi and power lights

I will suggest that you disconnect the DSL-AC68U from the live circuit and from your computer and, with it still powered up, perform a full factory reset via the recessed switch. (Usage of straightened out paper-clip.)

Allow it to stabilise. Connect your computer to it via the LAN1 port. Log into the GUI. Configure the LAN4 port as the EWAN port. Configure the operation mode as PPPoE. Enter the credentials "bthomehub@btbroadband.com" (with anything as the password). Disconnect your computer from it and power cycle the device.

Power up the Openreach ECI modem then connect its xDSL port to the line. Watch the LEDs, wait for it to synchronise with the DSLAM and stabilise.

Now link the LAN1 port of the ECI modem to the EWAN (LAN4) port of the DSL-AC68U and observe the LEDs on both devices. Wait a short while then connect your computer to one of the free LAN ports (1, 2 or 3) of the DSL-AC68U.

You should now have Internet access.  :)  If not, I do not know what else to suggest.  :(

I have a VMG1312-B10A and an Asus DSL-n55u in a similar configuration. The ZyXEL is in bridge mode and the Asus is the router set as PPPoE with username and password set also EWAN is set as LAN4 with LAN1 as my main PC. I don't understand why yours is not working, try password in the PPPoE password box as it may not like a blank.

Turn off the dual wan button (you're only using 1)
Set your Ethernet port
Go to WAN settings and choose PPPoe
Get WAN IP Automatically
username: bthomehub@btbroadband.com
password: bt
don't set any vlan stuff.

The ECI modem handles the DSL settings, dsl link, vlan 101 etc
The Asus gets your PPP session and gives you your IP
If the DSL light is green on the ECI then you only need to get the PPP settings right in the Asus

As already mentioned I believe having the VLAN set on your AC68U is likely to be the issue as it will already be setup on the ECI modem.
I fell foul of the same when playing with an HG612. :-[

Well, it seems to be working now. I tried so many variations of settings yesterday afternoon I cant fully remember what I tried and didnt try. It seems leaving the VLAN setting out worked, and setting the 802.1Q category that vlan-id is in to disabled.

Now I just got to wait for DLM to go hopefully in a few days my speeds will go back up. Thats the only thing with my ECI modem is the lack of stats.

Thanks for all the help and suggestions!

Still seem to be getting issues, after an uptime of around 1 day 4 hours just a few minutes ago I had a connection drop. General log from asus router:

Sep 30 12:59:07 WAN Connection: WAN was restored.

Speeds have dropped further from originally 73 down while still using HH4, to about 65 down, and now im getting 48-50 down.

Is there a chance Administration > DSL Settings > settings be conflicting with the modem, just like setting VLAN for the initial setup problem I was having? I have not touched any of these settings and assume they are all the router defaults. There is no way to disable them.
