Interesting VDSL2 Modem ...
« on: September 05, 2017, 05:37:18 AM »

If you'd like to add a VDSL modem to your modemless router, or even your switch - and your router/switch has SFP ports a solution is at hand -

About 90 euros.

More info from this thread over at the Mikrotik forums.  :)

I was interested in one of these, glad to see they're arriving in Europe. Proscend and Versatek were the only companies I came across with these at the time. I wanted to use one with an Ubiquiti EdgeRouter X SFP but I have no experience with SFP and had no idea about compatibility.

I think posts 98 and 99 in the Mikrotik thread explain things, you just attach by VLAN -

From pe1chl -

Great!!

I presume you further created a VLAN interface on top of the SFP, and a PPPoE interface attached to that VLAN?
(or maybe DHCP client when that provider does not use PPPoE)

Is there any way to access the connection info from the router or from a machine behind the router?
(to see the line mode, actual/attainable connection rate, SNR, number of re-trains, etc)

From Milotop -

Yes, I had to create a VLAN on the SFP interface and authenticate with PPPoE before I got any traffic running. This is standard with most VDSL connections here.

I haven't yet learned about the actual connector, I don't know if it has an (accessible) interface or not.

There's also some discussion on the Turris Omnia forums -

https://forum.turris.cz/t/vdsl-sfp-bridge-modem/1296

EDIT:

Don't know if you're aware but Ubiquiti have a new, faster, $140 EdgeRouter 4 coming out(50% faster) - with an SFP port.

Yes, they're commonplace for networking - but not as VDSL modems.  :) - in reply to  burakkucat's now deleted post.

Yeah, I came across the Turris forum too, the users seemed to be waiting for a European reseller at the time due to shipping costs.

I wasn't aware Ubiquiti had a new model on the way, thank-you. It's been several months since I looked at the Ubiquiti models with SFP and the SFP VDSL2 modems due to uncertainty with compatibility. I may take another look in the near future now I've been reminded!

They're already selling batches of the EdgeRouter 4(and EdgeRouter 6) in the Ubiquiti beta products section of the store - don't know the release date, must be soonish(they're also discussing them in the product testing section of the forums - not sure whether you can access that).

Oh, this looks interesting! Ironically I've got an EdgeRouter Pro 8 arriving tomorrow, so once my line issue is fixed and packet loss is gone I might opt to try this too :P. Any idea what chipset this uses?

Metanoia MT-V5311.

Oh I see, nice. I also notice it mentions CO and CPE mode.
