Connection issues, Router? Or other?
« on: August 30, 2017, 09:10:02 PM »

Hi all, I'm a long time lurker, but this is my first post....

So I've been having some odd disconnects recently, and seemingly randomly too. Both the HG612 and N66U seem to still be connected and DSLStats which is running in the background shows no drops or resyncs, as does the connection stats from Zen.

I also now and again get DNS issues in Chrome when loading pages, again randomly and they go and the page loads up just as quick as they appear.

I think its an issue with my router, but I'm not sure, so here are the logs from it below....

Does this give any ideas as to what might be the issue?

Router is an Asus RT-N66U running the latest version of Merlins custom FW.

Thanks for looking.

Reading through the log snippet that you have posted we can clearly see that the PPP session is being terminated by the RT-N66U. The termination occurs due to a sequence of ten failures of the LCP Echo Request / Echo Reply interchanges between Zen's PPP server and your PPP client (the Asus RT-N66U).

Do you have another device that you could temporarily use in place of the RT-N66U?

I do have the ZyXEL VMG1312 that they give you when you join, not used it before though, as I've always had my own router.

Do we think it's the router then? That was my original thought - It is about 3 years old now, maybe it's time to upgrade it to a newer model...

I'm assuming as the modem via DSLstats hasn't reported any resync's it not going to be the connection itself?

I cannot say for certain but there is something occurring (or not occurring) that results in the LCP Echo Request / Echo Reply failing for ten successive iterations and, as a consequence, the PPP session is terminated. The PPP session is between your router (the RT-N66U, the client) and Zen's server.

The underlying G.993.2 service, over which the PPP session is carried, is between your modem (the HG612) and the Openreach cabinet based DSLAM. That service remains viable and intact. As you quite rightly assume, any resynchronisation / retrain event should be visible to the monitoring utility.

The Zen supplied ZyXEL VMG1312-B10D can be configured as just a router and could be tried "behind" the HG612, in place of the RT-N66U or it can be configured as an all-in-one-box replacing both the HG612 and the RT-N66U.

The VMG1312-B10D is supported by DSLstats, so you would not loose the monitoring facility if you were to try that latter configuration.

Could try changing the PPP Max Echo requests to 15 to see if that cures it. Today I have seen similar symptoms on my DSL-N55U. It has dropped the session a couple of times with similar logs to you so I have increased the Max Echo requests to 15.

Who is your ISP mine is Uno via Daisy via TTB.

Well typically so far since posting its not done it again...

The only thing I've changed since then is the DHCP Lease time from 24 hours to 3 days as all my devices (the usual home stuff) have a static address and I don't get many new devices connecting and having 20 odd devices all requesting every day seems a little unnecessary and the log was full of DHCP logs.

Could that somehow have been the issue I wonder? Time will tell I guess.

My ISP is Zen, Banger.

Will try the above if it does though.

I shall keep this thread updated and thank you for the replies so far.  :)

I'm back. Still seeing the same issues. I've done a factory restore and upped the Echo Requests up to 15. No dice.

I haven't had a chance to try a difference router yet as I need to contact Zen as I can't log into the one they sent me. Any recommendations if I were to be looking to replace the N66U? :)

Latest log, not sure if it is of any use though.

Nothing wrong with the ZyXEL as a router, I am not sure what Zen set their admin password to but the default is admin 1234.

Any recommendations if I were to be looking to replace the N66U?
I suggest installing a different firmware....tomato http://tomato.groov.pl/

I can set 3 parameters for echo requests (see attachment)

Just thought I'd give a little update, I'm still having these issues. Here is what I've tried.

- I have factory reset the router.
- I've upped the Max Echo requests to 20.
- I'm on the latest stable Merlin FW. (380.68_2)
- Zen are running a smoke test (I think that's what he called it, basically a TBB BQM by the sounds of it) on my and a bunch of other Zen connectios at my exchange to check for any anomalies as he put it.
- They were supposed to call me back yesterday, I've heard nothing as yet.

I've not tried a new router as yet as they are monitoring the line and I don't want to screw up the testing.

Also if it helps, I'm on https://www.mydslwebstats.co.uk/Container.htm - my username is .Sam.

Here's the log from the most recent time its done it.
