ZyXel VMG1312-B10D Compatability
« on: August 06, 2017, 12:04:17 PM »

I would like to change out the basic PN Hub One (BT HH5a) modem/router on a FTTC line (ISP Plusnet) for something fairly basic which would provide better stat's monitoring capability, run DSLStats on RPi to MDWS so I can keep an eye on my daughters home PN installation remotely.

The ZyXel VMG1312-B10D would seem to suit my requirements, is listed as compatable with DSLStats and within the spec. limitations of the unit gets good reviews in service to a Huawei FTTC DSLAM.
These units are currently listed on a very well known site at a very good price, however, the small print indicates that although brand new they are Zen badged, I know Zen now supply these to their customers.

My question is:
Will I be able to easily set this unit up for PN fibre service & DSLStats monitoring without major unlocking ?
I have monitored a lot of recent forum threads on ZyXel routers level of accessability and the general attitude of ZyXel to requests for different user level passwords etc. on branded devices, detailed information on configuration mostly above my head.

I could of course purchase a new, un-branded unit at more than twice the cost !

I've got a Zen-branded VMG1312-B10D, and I used it for a while on my Plusnet FTTC connection. There were no problems setting it up. The recent discussions about supervisor passwords and suchlike are to do with advanced purposes which don't affect users who just want to set the device up and use it.

Is it easy to configure as a modem only?

this guide will work for all vdsl zyxel models, it will also work on isp locked devices.  Although on my john lewis device I had to tick telnet lan access.

My VMG1312-B10D, purchased brand new, was a Zen ISP customised version.

The only step required to remove all the Zen customisations was to clear the ROM-D.

Thanks to all for the comments and advice, much appreciated.

Although I would have prefered one of the ZyXel units, the cheaper units I was considering on that well known web site appear to have disappeared at the moment, would have been just as cheap to buy a new, un-branded item from various sources.
I've decided to run with a S/H. Billion 8800NL,v2 which fulfils my requirements and should be adequate for the application in hand.
