Does fibre really make this much difference?
« on: August 01, 2017, 12:45:14 PM »

Hi all.
I've decided to have a go at fibre and upgrade from standard bb to fibre optic. (plusnet)

According to the checks on here I am 2.98 km direct and 4 km by road from the exchange and currently I get a pretty pathetic  2-3mb dl speed.

Now, according to the checks I 'may' with fibre get somewhere in the region of 19mb to 26mbps.  That's a pretty huge theoretical leap in speed and life changing I might add  ;D.

So, what I am wondering is,  if I get fttc and assuming the cabinet is perhaps half way between me and the exchange ???

Will this little extra 2km of FTTC from the exchange really give me an increase of around 20mbps ? Or am I missing something??

"Will this little extra 2km of FTTC from the exchange really give me an increase of around 20mbps ??"

Not sure what that means but to  put it in simple terms ........... ADSL (The Broadband you are on now), is fed over copper cable direct from the Exchange, the maximum you can get on this product is 24Mbps. The further you are away from the Exchange the less you will see of the 24Mbps.

VDSL (or Fibre To The Cab), see the broadband signal start its journey at a green box (Cabinet) somewhere between you and the Exchange. The speeds available on this product (Downstream) are 'Up to' ... 18, 40,55 and 80Meg. The speed you will receive, ie: as in the estimate they have given you, is based on the distance from the Cabinet to your premises, as this is what it says on the tin 'Fibre To The Cab' ........ the broadband still uses the copper cable from the Cab to the premises.  :)

So what I am saying is - I currently get bb on copper cable from the exchange through to my house .

So with fibre , there must be a cab somewhere half way or so between me and the exchange.  Half of this connection then will still be copper to my house.

So the other half from the cab back to the exchange is fibre - About 1.5km /2km  ish

So, by upgrading to fibre,  what I am asking is - Does that initial '1.5km' really make this massive difference of around 20mbps

The Cab isn't necessarily half-way between you and the Exchange. It could quite feasibly be outside your front door.

But yes, in layman's terms, it is this distance from the Cab to your premises that dictate the speed you will eventually receive. If you GOOGLE 'VDSL speed v distance graphs' ..... there will be something lurking that gives an idea of what to expect.

Looks like I may be a bit late, but entering your number in the DSLchecker it will show your cabinet number, and then follow the steps shown elsewhere on this site to find the cabinet,

Thanks guys . Yes I was going to say that the cab could be anywhere in the stretch.   And I guess that could make a huge difference.

So it's cab 9.

Cant locate cabinet 9. Have to go out on foot!

However,  The tests here indicate it's VDSL range B impacted which worries me now.   It could be a rubbish signal coming through.  I guess Ill have to wait and see. ..

TAlk about a postcode lottery . :o

Why do you think its an impacted line? If your internal wiring is OK there should be no problem assuming no aluminium cable on your line. If the checker says you are on a Market B exchange that is something else and nothing to do with FTTC speeds.

I used this link http://dslchecker.bt.com/adsl/adslchecker.TelephoneNumberOutput

I have a feeling I mistook MARKET B for  VDSL RANGE B which means impacted.

And I am on  Portishead exchange ........
