Odd occurrence with caller ID
« on: August 01, 2017, 11:48:02 AM »

This morning I had a call that Caller ID identified as International, but on pick-up the screen changed to Withheld. Normally I ignore international calls, but my daughter and family are camping in S. France. Just as well I did pick up! Call was from hospital to adviser my wife not to attend for pre-op, as they had all the info they needed. Had I ignored the call we would have nearly a forty mile return trip.

Is it a BT problem, or one with our DECT phone, do you think?

Phone is 8 y.o. Panasonic?

My suspicion is that it was just a glitch with the hospital's telephone system and nothing to be concerned about.

Your telephone, at eight years of age, is just an infant.  :baby:

I have a 61 years old telephone connected to my circuit.  :oldman:

Thanks B'cat for replying, but how could a glitch with hospital's equipment have 'labelled' its call intentional, when dial out is from an 01xxx number?

I'm pleased you can use such veteran equipment. Illustration  looks it could be a bit shaky.;D ;)

Probably the hospital are using some low cost routing that takes them outside of the BT network and, like many things outside of the BT network, is a little bit quirky.

Medical institutions often do withold their number.  They want to avoid causing worry to people who get home, find a missed call and, when they identify the caller as a doctor or whatever,  start to fret and worry about it.

Within the network, in the days I worked on that technology, the 'international' flag was independent from 'calling party number'.

They use two number series, both BT.

When my dad was with Sky on at least 2 occasions he said my number had come up as International when I called.   Normally it should come up as withheld.    Must admit it was a few years ago now, but we were both puzzled at the time.
afaik it hasn't happened since they moved away from Sky, but saying that mum isn't as astute as dad was at noticing that sort of thing.
