Hi All,

Not sure if this is the right forum for this question, but here goes anyway.....

I am sick to death of BT's FTTC service to my premises. The upload speed is dropping by the day. I contacted FluidOne about FTTPoD and their prices were stupid. However, they offered me a leased line option, which is symmetrical, for a lot less than FTTPoD (no installation charge for example). Has anyone had any experience of of FTTPoD vs leased line?

A leased line should be better, generally you can expect no contention and SLA for uptime.

What I don't understand is how a Leased Line can be so much cheaper than FTTPoD. They still have to run a fibre to my premises either way, but with a Leased Line there is no installation charge, compared to > £8K for FTTPoD

I'm not 100% certain but maybe it's because a leased line is always going to be a leased line even after the contract. That meaning you'll always pay the higher monthly cost of a leased line for the duration of the contract plus the time after the contract's term has concluded. I imagine a leased line can't be made into FTTP. If it could then it would definitely be cheaper to get a leased line first and then switch to FTTP after the contract's term has concluded.

Are you certain there won't be separate ECC or survey charges?

Are you sure they are offering to install fibre to your premises for free? A leased line is not necessarily Fibre to the property.

Part of the huge difference in price is because you'll continue to pay for that leased line at a premium till the end of time.
With FTTPod it switches to native FTTP after 3 years. So they only have those 3 years to make their money.
It's also deliberately overpriced to stop large numbers of users ordering it. I suspect that without pressure from the likes of Ofcom then OpenReach wouldn't offer FTTPod at all.

The leased line is a lower burst as well just 50/100 mbps?

Do you live in a city/densely populated urban area? Likely close to a network they can easily tap into, and fairly cheap to reach your property.

edit: read back your post. 36 month minimum term. 36x£375 = £13500. Not such a bargain imo.
Over 3 years FTTPod is £21,000 (install+rental)
Then native FTTP for life. Can be considerably cheaper once you start counting 5-6+ years down the line.
Most people are also much closer to their nearest Agg Node. Only 4% of premises are band H or above.

My boss's leased line is quite a bit cheaper than what you've been quoted, but she paid a chunky installation charge. Only an 18 month term also, as the business is relocating next summer.

I've read about this nearest Agg node business. My cab is is a about 600 meters away, I assume that's not the Agg node?

They did offer me a 12 month contract with a £1000 installation charge, still way cheaper than FTTPoD

The aggregation node can be near the cab or it could be much further away, which in your case it sounds like it is.

What about having two or three bonded or load balanced fttc lines?

I doubt there's enough pairs to have a bonded FTTC. The leased line is looking favourable right now.

It's outrageous that I have to pay through the nose for something that actually works 

And j0hn, no I'm not in a city/densely populated urban area. That's the problem
