V1.00(AAJZ.6)C1_20150911 is a pretty old firmware (over 2 years old). The latest is V1.00(AAJZ.12)C0

I would recommend updating it. You won't lose access to the device.
The latest firmware can be obtained here: ftp://ftp2.zyxel.com/VMG1312-B10A/firmware/

Very weird.... uploaded the .bin and it went through the motions.... told me it had done it, then stopped responding.

Power cycled it, and its back up with the old firmware version!

So - should I upload the .rom first? - and if not, do you upload the .rom the same way as the .bin?

I guess I should just try again (when I get the kids off the net....)?

You should only need the .bin file.
Once loaded it should warn you that it is rebooting and then you need to wait a couple of minutes for it to reboot before logging back in.

I believe the .rom file is just a default config file that you can load using the backup/restore config option.
Unless you are downgrading your firmware (which you aren't) you should not normally need to use it.

I would recommend that you use the following steps when updating the firmware --
  • Power down the device, allowing it send a "dying gasp" to the DSLAM.
  • Disconnect all leads from the device (including the xDSL patch cable), except for an Ethernet patch cable to connect to the computer system to be used for the update process and, obviously, the PSU.
  • Power on the device and allow it to stabilise. That might take 2+ minutes.
  • Login to the GUI and ignore any warnings about the disconnected xDSL patch lead.
  • Go to the relevant location within the GUI and update the firmware.
  • Leave the device alone for at least 5 minutes.
  • Power down the device.
  • Reconnect all the leads disconnected in step 2, above.
  • Power on the device.
If, after following the above, the firmware is still found to be the original version then there is something very peculiar occurring.
