Recomended FTTC vdsl modem 2017
« on: July 24, 2017, 12:43:56 PM »

Hi all, long term viewer but never posted.

Around six months ago BT came to fix a line fault and as I had heard before they insisted on replacing my trusty HG612 modem with the HCI modem, I can no longer get line stats and I also lost around 10Mbps on my sync speed (estimated) from that day forward
im roughly 150m from the cabinet but not sure what hardware is inside.

I used to sync at around 68,500 & 20,000 up with the HG162 and RTN66U (merlin) on sky pro

Long and short im looking for a new modem or router combo that is able to obtain the best sync speed and hopefully recover my lost speed.

Seen lots of talk of the billion and zyxel but a lot of the discussed units are now discontinued or not available.

Whats the current recommendations now that interleaving is available?

Cheers in advance.

I can thoroughly recommend the ZyXEL VMG1312-B10A in bridge mode as a modem. Given me extra sync compared to other routers eg TP-Link W9970, Billion 8800NL R2 and HG612. With the latest firmware, it is nice and stable and I have just completed and uptime of 18 days with a sync of 71334/18934. The best little device I have had. Either that or the Billion 8800NL R1 which has the same chipset as the ZyXEL but haven't tested on my line.

If you're willing to go second hand there is one for sale here: http://forum.kitz.co.uk/index.php/topic,19979.0.html

If you haven't already done so, I would recommend that you take a look at the very first post of the "Combined VDSL2 Modem Routers" thread.

Many thanks for your feedback and cheers Banger for the link, for £30 its worth a punt.

Burakkucat, I did look through that post but again no definitive answers on what is current and generally deemed the best, some of the discussions go back several years, very much appreciated though your input.

In general, a Broadcom chipset is preferable. As for manufacturers, ZyXEL and Billion tend to "top the list".

The problem is that every xDSL circuit is different and so it is very much a case of "suck it and see". (And that will explain why the average kitizen will have a collection of modem/routers. ;)  )

There is also a Billion R1 8800NL which I have seen recommended on here.

Slightly cheaper than the ZyXEL but same chipset. I have never tried it on my line but it has seen good recommendations on here.
