Rain causing SNR Margin to increase
« on: July 22, 2017, 01:30:52 PM »

When it rains my SNR Margin increases, I thought it should be the other way round?

Had a quick shower around 13:00 and you can clearly see the effect on my SMR Margin. Any ideas on why this would happen?

On my connection this happens if SRA reduces the connection speed. Do you see changes in speed during rain?

could be water building up somewhere and allowing to dampen a joint or something e.g. in a junction box or at pole.

Don't see any speed changes, unless I re-sync the modem and will normally see a speed increase due to the higher SNR Margin caused by the rain.

Here's an example from the second lot of rain we had yesterday, gained 1 Mbps from a re-sync.

I did re-sync a few times yesterday whilst experimenting with re-syncing when the SNR Margin went above 6dB and I saw max attainable speed above my current sync speed, which I think had caused DLM to apply interleaving especially since we also had bad thunderstorms a couple of nights ago which caused loads of errors on the line.

I'll leave things to settle down now and keep an eye on the stats. Here's today's current stats.

Hi

Could be the rain is knocking someone else off and they are a cross talker with your line, so while they are offline you are seeing reduced noise.

This is what I would say is most probable.
Rain sometimes causes SNR to drop, but it is not unknown for it to also wet the line sufficiently to improve a slightly oxidised joint.

Thanks everyone, expecting rain this afternoon so will watch my stats and maybe a cheeky reboot of the HG612.

After some thunderstorms a while ago which screwed my speed, currently at 4470 kbps interleaved down at 67 with a max attainable of 5136 kbps and SNR margin of 6.6dB.

I'm considering a writing a script to poll and reboot the modem if the SNR margin increases above say 6.5 dB. Any thoughts as to whether this is a good/bad idea? Would have to figure it around DLM though.

Not good but not bad. Perhaps "educational fun" would be a good description.

You could do that with dslstats

Dray, had a look at my dslstats config tabs but can't see how to do that.

I'll look later but you can run a cmd when snrm reaches a trigger

It's on the Configuration => Alerts tab and allows you to send yourself an email for various triggers.  I don't see one for SNRM rises above though, only below. There is one marked 'SNRM returns to more than nn dB' which I suppose could work - it's adjacent to 'SNRM falls below' but doesn't appear to be linked to setting that.

You'll need all the login details for your email server.

Saw the email option, but I want to do it automagically..... With my line by the time I had read the email and logged in the SNR would be below threshold again and I'm lazy :)

Want hands offs monitoring of SNR and then reboot/resync, with a little logic thrown so DLM does get too upset.

I don't think there's a way to do this automatically with DSLstats.
