Increase in ES errors and other problems
« on: June 26, 2017, 08:06:35 AM »

HI,

( second attempt at posting, first one got stuck in the cat flap )

I'm not sure whats happening with my line, I have fftc for a few weeks, first week I was on fast path with hardly any errors, then I was moved to interleaved up /down quite heavily. Yesterday I had a disconnect while i was out but I had dslstats running on a server, today I checked the stats and things seem a bit odd with the large increase in ES errors, then i noticed the downstream had been moved back to fastpath but not the upstream.

The ES errors where a little high a few days ago so i tried capping the modem to reduce them, capped to 30 down 6 up, it did help a little but the noise margin started going erratic. The stats here are from this morning, not capped.

I have done a quite line test at 6 am to the master socket of the BT mk3 filter plate, I can hear a faint intermittent hum, its random and no pattern to it. I have attached the stats just after this mornings reboot. So far I have swapped modems and power supplies and cables but there is no difference.

A year or so ago I had a line fault, high resistance joint and had the pairs swapped, I wonder if this is happening again, if there is a fault could some kind person advise on how to get it fixed ? Thanks.

I agree that something odd is taking place. Both the CRC and QLN plots show some craziness.

Then I saw "DSLAM/MSAN type:           IFTN:0xb206 / v0xb206" which told me that you are another unfortunate with a G.993.2 service whose metallic pathway terminates on an ECI Hi-FOCuS Mini Shelf M41 DSLAM (MSAN).  :-X

I really don't like making suggestions when ECI equipment is involved . . . However you might find that power down of the modem and leaving it thus for, say, 30 minutes might clear the craziness.  :-\

Thanks for replying burakkucat,

Those stats are the least crazy, I have a whole days worth full of red blocks and a good few green ones too. I spoke to my ISP an hour ago, they did a test and it came back clear ( typical ) however this latest problem began on Sunday at around 3 pm, the ISP confirmed they did some sort of upgrade at that time to the dslam concerned. I have changed the modem from a HG612 3B to a spare HG612 3B and am now trying a Zyxel VMG3925-B10B, I did really want to use a draytek 130 but that didn't work out so it was returned.

To add insult to injury I noticed my ISP had double billed me this month  :( anyway while I like I wounds and sulk because I had a bad feeling when i moved to fftc, I will try and find out what this 'G.993.2 service ' is, I take it by saying 'unfortunate' you have some knowledge of this, care to share, go on, you know you want to !

G.993.2 is the ITU-T's recommendation for "Very high speed digital subscriber line transceivers 2 (VDSL2)" which is part of the "Metallic access networks (G.990 - G.999)" section which, in turn, is part of the "Digital sections and digital line systems (G.900 - G.999)" section which, in turn, is part of the "Transmission systems and media, digital systems and networks (G series)". Phew . . .

It the the usage of ECI Telecom's access equipment, namely the Hi-FOCuS Mini Shelf M41 MSAN, that I consider to be unfortunate.  :-X

In Openreach's current deployment of "FTTC", three types of MSAN (configured just as a DSLAM) are used: two from Huawei and one from ECI. The DSLAM converts individual end-users' metallic pathways to/from one common optical fibre. The ECI equipment has been bedevilled with problems from the beginning and so end-users connected via such equipment are always lagging behind what end-users connected via Huawei equipment are currently experiencing.  :(

Thank you for taking the time to explain .. whew indeed !

I always knew our communications network was created on a shoe string, I learned that years ago when my trusty INTERNET and phone went off one afternoon, we found the cause, an OR engineer had closed the road cab door on some cables, as time went by, if we had problems with the Internet or phone one of us walked to the top of the road and yep, there was the cab open.

I suppose because I have high speed broadband i can expect any problems to arrive at high speed too  ;D

I left the modem off as you suggested, nothing to loose but it didn't do change the stats. the tech guru I spoke to this evening requested the stats I had collected, so he got them, all 320 of them, it should keep him busy for a while  ;D
