Vodafone Broadband
« on: May 17, 2017, 11:49:10 PM »

Hello,

Today i had my Vodafone broadband activate, and so far im happy. I was just wondering if anyone knew how to get the DHCP Username and Password from the router to use my own Modem/Router. I've tried to get it from they but they where quoting something about ofcom allow them to hold back the information, i was also told that i should find another provider if their router dont meet my requirements, which i was kind of annoyed about.

I've tried using Wireshark, but it appears that they have hidden that information from there.. Does anyone know any way else?

Kind Regards.

Welcome to the Kitz forum.  :)

Please take some time to read through NewtronStar's Which ISP thread, which provides some of the background information to the Vodafone (Huawei) HHG2500 thread.

I really can't understand why they appear to be so willing to lose custom over something so anal.   There's quite a few people who have got out purely because of the modem.   However check first if they do allow you to go without penalty.

There is a rather long thread about it here.   Bishbashbosh has had some success but currently there is some doubt if it could leave security issues.  Vodafone have been made aware of this, so some posts have currently been pulled whilst vodafone have chance to respond.
The guys are still pursuing other methods.  There is no simple or easy way.  That modem is locked down hard.

Hello,

I did also notice on my ventures with this router, that the WAN port dont seem to be useable at all... my HG612's Lan1 port never lights up when connected to this router.. Coming from Sky to Vodafone i thought the router would be more lienant... but heck no it aint... Also yeah im not sure why that guy was so anal about me asking for my PPPoE information... ill probbly ask again sometime today when Live Chat is available.

I wouldn’t even bother trying to get the info, the VF staff can’t give it to on pain of possibly losing their job.

Apparently they have been told that if they give out passwords they could be sacked (gross misconduct), unless of course you know better.

I would still suggest you ask though,  the more people ask they might eventually change their minds but I doubt.

Just tried today, they wouldn't give it to me. They first stated that they dont know that information and then later said to me that they are not authorised to give it out because of company policy.

So this means i have to get it the hard way... and looking at that other topic... it seems way out of my league to try and get the username and password. Surprises me not even wireshark works.

Tried speaking to them again, still no luck, i did get confirmation that staff who do give out the username and passwords will get fired, so im obviously not going to try and push someone into getting fired for the sake of getting a username and password. Im getting a phone call soon as im having an issue with my line, been running speed tests all day and been constantly getting around 12Mbps... even though the router tells me that its getting 60Mbps... which is a lie and its probably peaking at that for a second while it up links so the router can get its speed. One thing i have found very odd, is the router makes absolutely no use of its WAN port... its RJ11 or bust with that thing... Which is kind of odd to me. I wish there was an easy way of being able to grab the username and password from something like Wireshark... but at this point it seems to be impossible, VF have covered their tracks very well when locking down this router.

All, there is real progress if you can perform the packet capture and you have a good GPU. A process has been found to crack the CHAP authentication for the VF service using hashcat.
