Problem with Vista Favorites disappearing
« on: April 28, 2008, 06:56:30 PM »

The problem:- When I click to show my favorites it either comes up blank or I get the following message:-

Quote
Documents\Tomtom\home from device\backup\favorites refers to a location that is unavailable. It could be on a hard drive on this computer, or on a network, check to make sure the disk is properly inserted, or that you are connected to the internet and then try again. If it still cannot be located the information might have been moved to a different location.

Reply,
(This is a standard message because Vista could not find the favorites folder).
Where it got the TomTom bit from "who knows" because it is a SatNav program some of us use for updating our TomTom SatNav.

The same problem JUST occurred on my own Vista PC as I type this note.
So the problem is not just your PC but a Vista problem in general.
The only thing I have done myself it to re-start the PC a couple of times and it's now working again,
(although it has lost all of the stored favourites in the folder)

**************

We now have Three different options:-

1. Check your Recycle Bin
.... And select replace if it's there. I say this because for some reason I just found my lost Favorites folder in there.

2. Try a System Restore, because that might put it right.
.... (Select a date when your system was working properly)
.... If you are unsure how to do a System Restore, this link (courtesy of Davem is very useful)
.... Step by Step instructions with pictures

3. Find and move the folder back to the correct place
.... Firstly you need to show the hidden files by:-

A) From the desktop select, Computer, then select "Tools" followed by "Folder Options" then "View"
.... now select "Show hidden files and folders" followed by "Apply" and "OK"
.... Once the hidden files and folders option is done look down the directory list and see if the favorites folder is now in view.

B) If it is, then you need to move the folder back to it's original place.
.... so you need to go to and Open:-

C:\
Users
then in the Users folder, select the folder with your name on it.

Now, using the mouse, "right click and hold" the favorites folder and drag it onto the folder with your name on it.
When you let go it will ask if you want to Copy or Move, "select Move"

Please note:
This document has been changed to try and make it easier to understand and may also be altered further.
At the moment we are still waiting to hear from the OP if the Favorites Folder is now working properly.

First of all, try a System Restore, because that might put it right first.

vista users will also find that after running system restore, after the reboot it will say that it has failed, then all attempts at other restore points fail as well ............. if this happens then run system restore from safe mode and it'll be ok.
