I am a new FTTC subscriber was ADSL before with Xilo.

Oh I see this is going to take a wee bit longer for G.INP to become active on your circuit my guesstimate in a months time but we all know to well in the Kitz forum the DLM is never easy to predict and enjoys making fools of those who try  ;)

Right DLM is magic by all standards. If BT decide to replace my drop wire it wont cost me anything will it ?

A drop wire (or drop cable) implies an overhead, aerial, feed. You do not have that.

You have an underground service feed.

Right well will it cost me anything to get the underground feed replaced?

If the fault is not after the NTE/5 socket in your premises or ISP supplied modem then you will not be charged but if the OR Engineer comes knocking on your door and your not in then expect a charge from your ISP

Hope its not me modem as its new although I have a spare HG612 and that syncs at the same speed. I am just trying to think of ways to convince the engineer I need a new underground feed because it will be no doubt expensive to dig 30m of drive.

Have already ordered a BT Mk3 faceplate to replace my ADSLNation XTE-2005 plate so he cant quibble about that. Uno has told me to get all sorts of details off him, name and what he does.

Have you shown Uno that photograph of the substandard, abnormal, service feed?

They should mention it on the engineering request to Openreach.

whilst the underlying tech is the same for both isps, which is openreach based FTTC.

The Guarantee is not worthless, it essentially means 2 things.

1 - If they cannot fulfill it then you have a penalty free exit on the contract.
2 - Because of #1 they likely to try and get it fixed by openreach.

Usually the guaranteed speed is very conservative (well below the low clean estimate of BTw), so either the estimator is whacked for your line or your line is seriously under performing.

What does the BTw checker estimate for your address.  (Address not postcode).

I dont think its twisted pair its about 30m long and is a figure 8 kind of cable. Here is a pic https://ibb.co/f7e21F.

Uno want an SFI Engineer to attend as Openreach have said there is noise impulse at my property between 0600 and 0945 weekdays.
Were you in the property when that cable was installed? If so who installed it.

You're not allowed to replace it yourself. Anything before the NTE5 Master Socket is OpenReach's network and responsibility. They will likely replace that cable, and not at your expense. It looks ducted so shouldn't be too big a job.

Hi

It looks to me like that is bell wire, perhaps the developer wired it up on the cheap.

Whether it is making much difference or not you will only find out if/when it gets replaced.  A lot depends on how far it runs, and if it is underground it's partly shielded from interference, but if that cable run then joins and bundles up with other similar cables, you will pick up cross talk.  Now you don't pick up anymore cross talk than you would with normal BT cable, however the twists of twisted pair telephone cable help cancel out noise.

Regards

Phil

A bit of history. The wire was installed by BT in the 80s when they were running a free reconnect offer. It was put in white conduit underground then my dad concreted over it. It is a 30m run to a jointing post at the gate from house.

I DO want a replacement cable but last time I had engineers when I had a fault they hummed and harred about cost if the fault was with the feed.

It looks like 2 pair in figure 8 configuration cable thus not twisted pair, but in the 80s FTTC wasnt about.

Uno will push Openreach on the cable but they want to monitor the line for errors after I replace the ADSLNation faceplate with a BT Mk3. There is an Openreach advisory on the line of excess errors on the line between 6am and 945am. It could be picking up interference from a neighbours boiler on that cable as nothing is on between those times in my house.

Difficult to tell from the poor quality picture, but it looks like a complete bodge was done by burying a length of dropwire3 (single pair) in the ground.

Yes someone on another forum identified it as DW3 single pair.
