TalkTalk 38mbit fibre
« on: March 14, 2017, 10:11:54 AM »

TalkTalks new DLM for ADSL LLU customers really sucks big time, it insists on adding stupid amounts of interleave on a perfectly stable line, reducing sync and adding at least 16ms latency. I have had enough of that.

I've decided to upgrade my second line from ADSL2+ to Fibre. Since I was already in a contract (9 months left) with TalkTalk it was cheaper to just upgrade with them and start a new 12 month contract :(

Anyway, so with this being 38mbit fibre, does anybody know if TalkTalk cap the speed or is it controlled by the sync? The reason I am confused is tht there seems to be an option to upgrade on a per month basis to the higher 78mbit speed and if that was done at the Openreach end it would mean a change of product, DLM reset etc etc.

Well when I went fibre with TT I started on the 40/2 option and then a month later turned on the 80/20 option, seemed seamless with no obvious reset. So I guess they cap the speeds for 40/2 but I'm not 100% sure.

I just had a look at all user stats on MDWS and it seems there are a few TalkTalk users on there with a sync of 2000 on the US which suggests it's the sync speed that is reduced. Interesting. Can you really just upgrade to 80/20 for a few months then move back to 40/2 with no additional fees or change of contract?

It'll be controlled via the cabinet, but can be limited via the quality/length of your line. So either 40/2 sync or 80/20 sync maximum dependant on package, but if your line supports less than 40 then changing to the 80/20 won't make any difference to the download speed,  but your upload will likely be better. Which ever is the lower (line or product) will always be the limiting factor.

Openreach sell four products for FTTC,  40/2, 40/10, 55/10 and 80/20. TT only sell 40/2 and 80/20.

Thanks, my other line now only supports upto 65/20, so it will be interesting to see how they both comapare with x-talk etc. I am pretty sure the 2 pairs are only x-talking with each other from my house to my front garden (where there is a bt inspection thing right in the middle of my grass).
