FTTPoD now available in several more exchange areas
« on: March 12, 2017, 10:25:38 PM »

It seems that FTTP on Demand is now available on many more exchanges for those already connected to a FTTC Enabled cabinet.

After doing a little bit of research, I believe I have found a general pattern for this latest rollout, where the following are all true - with perhaps the odd exception.

  • Exchange is already FTTP Enabled
  • All cabinets on exchange are Huawei
  • Exchange is in England, Scotland or Wales. Northern Ireland doesn't seem to be included

Example exchanges that are now enabled for FTTPoD. They all fit the above pattern
  • Everton, Liverpool
  • Ripon, North Yorks
  • Aberystwyth, Wales
  • Chard, Somerset
  • Appleby-in-Westmorland, Cumbria
  • Parbold, Wigan

Now, if only FTTPoD was cheap and easy to order...  ;D

Interesting.

I just checked, and found that I'm now enabled for FTTPoD too. That's Harrogate, North Yorkshire, and meets all 3 of your criteria.

I'll take a pass, for now, though.

Following your theory, I quickly checked on the other two exchanges in the town - both of which (presumably) treat the main Harrogate exchange as their parent...
- Starbeck exchange, which has no FTTP areas, seems not to have FTTPoD as an option
- Oatlands Mount exchange, which does have some limited FTTP availability, does have FTTPoD as an option.

Limited sampling, though.

In the original rollout, Harrogate came first. Starbeck was added a couple of years later. Oatlands came later, and only as part of BDUK.

As a counterexample I nominate my own exchange, SSPTN (Purton, Swindon), which is all Huawei, but has *no* FTTP (as far as I'm aware) and *does* have FTTPoD.

The restriction to Huawei cabinets is another nail in the coffin for the ECI estate of BTOR. Another reason to replace it all.

Hmm interesting. Just had a look but I believe FTTPoD was already available on this exchange before this latest rollout? At least according to Codelook. The pattern only seems to apply for newly enabled exchanges

Ah yes, sorry. This wasn't part of the latest rollout.

I'm on an ECI cabinet on the SDESTBR exchange and my line says I can get FTTPoD.

Nice  :) It looks like there may be even more exchanges enabled than I thought. At this rate, it won't be long until it's rolled out everywhere!

Further to that, hopefully the pricing is made more viable too.

Personally wouldn't mind a higher initial fee, say 4-5k, then regular GEA-FTTP pricing.

Available in Gravesend on a Huawei cabinet now, too.

Just a shame it's so blimmin' expensive.  I'd love to have fibre-only internet and IP phones for a competitive price.  Maybe in a couple of decades...

It's appears to be available on many more exchanges that simply have FTTP enabled. It's just not showing as available on the BTw checker.
If you try place an order for FTTPod through an ISP who offers it then they would contact Openreach to check if it's available and "enable" it on the exchange.
An example of this can be seen here.
I've sen a couple of other examples of this. My exchange doesn't show FTTPod as being available, but Fluidone have confirmed it is available and if I wanted to place an order they would ask Openreach to "open it up to orders". It's not something I'm going to persue myself, I was enquiring on someone elses behalf.
