HG612 + HH5 Port Forwarding issues/question
« on: March 01, 2017, 04:56:04 PM »

Hi,
I have searched the forums (and other internet resources) without too much success.
To get a good wifi signal my HH5 is 15m from the master socket. If I move it close to the socket with a shorter cabler then speeds (FTTC) increase 15-20%.
To get round the issues, I installed an HG612 (Unlocked) which connects at good rates.
However, I cannot get any of my IP cameras or webservers visible from the internet. These all work fine with the port forwarding on the HH5, but when I connect the HH5 to the HG612 no port forwarding seems to work despite refreshing the noip dynamic dns.
I enabled UPNP and still no luck, but everything works for standard web browsing/email etc. Connecting the HH5 back to the line and everything is OK. All the devices I am forwarding ports on have static IP addresses.
I see several options on the HG612 in the settings for the WAN bridge mode such as IP_Bridged and PPoE Bridged but am not sure if these will affect the port forwarding? All I want is for the HG612 to literally pass everything through (both ways) and let the HH5 provide the firewall.
Any ideas?
It would be great to have the improved performance if at all possible.
PS I did get a good screened CAT5e cable to use as an extension from the phone socket but speeds still drop rapidly with distance.

You are going to want PPPoE Bridged, and you will need to disable the firewall on the HG612, otherwise you get issues with doubled up NAT, which may be causing your port forwarding issues.

I use IP_Bridged with no problems. How are you connecting the HG612 to the HH5?

Thanks for the responses.
The connection was simple - just the LAN1 port to the Red WAN port on the HH5 and the LAN2 port to my HH5. The HH5 then connects to a 10 port gigabit switch which then connects everything else (plus a wifi extender).
It was connected using IP_Bridge.
Some of the other settings on the HG612 are;
Firewall = standard
DMZ = Disabled
IGMP Snooping = allowed
IGMP Proxy = enabled
UPNP = Enabled
Under WAN;
Connection = Bridge
Bridge Type = IP_Bridged
DHCP transparent transmission = Enabled

I will try tomorrow changing the bridge to PPoE and see what happens and post back (plus disable the firewall).
Thanks.

Hi

I maybe wrong, so apologies in advance, but there's 2 things

Firstly, make sure QoS is turned off on hg612

Secondly, as HH5 has both vdsl and wan port, perhaps as vdsl is no longer in use, it needs its route to change to WAN for forward ports/rules

Many thanks

Thanks for all the help.
I reset the HG612 to factory defaults, then set the bridge to PPoE_Bridge, DHCP Disabled, Firewall Disabled, IGMP Snooping and Proxy enabled, UPNP Disabled.
Everything seems to work now - BT Youview, NetFlix Streaming, remote setting of YOuView recordings and all the Port Forwarded cameras and NAS systems.
Needless to say, config is now backed up!
Interesting statistic here;
The HH5 when 15m away from the socket was connecting at 22.4/4.7 and now with the HG612 connected beside the master socket on 1.5m cable, I am getting 27.3/5.7 connection speeds.
Wholesale speed tests also improved from 21/4.2 and are now 24.7/5.3.
Thanks again for the guidance.

Chances are you have a HH5 Type A and a Huawei cabinet.

Correct! HH5A and Huawei Cabinet.
However, when the HH5A was next to the master socket with a short lead it was quite a bit faster than when on a dedicated extension 12m away (almost the same connection speed as the HG612).
I had heard that others have tried the same solution as myself to circumvent the issues with a VDSL router being too far away from a master socket. THis way, I can put the 'router' almost anywhere that I can get an ethernet cable to by having the 612 right at the master socket acting just as a modem/bridge.
I reverted to the HH5 after having had 3 of the new HH6s which kept rebooting and losing wifi.

Been looking at the stats and am worried about the HEC errors which are showing 4,294,967,290 which I cannot believe. I only installed the HG612 yesterday!
I am 1.5Km from the cabinet so I guess the SBR is about right for that distance?
I have attached the stats screen.
Thanks for any feedback.

The WebUI of the HG612 gives incorrect stats.The correct stats can be obtained via telnet.

Thanks.
Final Q; Is it possible to reset the stats in the modem (CRC, HEC etc)?

Power the HG612 down, wait more than 31 minutes or more then power it back up.

I just ignored those stats and installed DSLstats   http://dslstats.me.uk/index.html
and use them.
My HG612 is saying 5670 and DSLstats say 82.5 HEC's/hour  :o

Also when you plug your modem into your HH5 'LAN port' in needs to be set up as an 'Access Point only' for the WiFi (plenty on line guides how to do that for using an old router for WiFi access points,  I had 5 at one time around my large house and garden  ;D). so a lot of the other setting are not used on the HH5.
