Arch Linux -only proper geeks need apply

I have been fiddling with Linux for a lot of years and usually have my work laptop setup to dual boot into Ubuntu so I can pretend its not a work laptop and to keep personal stuff separate  >:D.

When Ubuntu crapped itself due to my dodgey drive caddy (happens sometimes) instead of just reinstalling Ubuntu I thought I would man-up be a smart arse and install Arch Linux, cos thats what all the awesome geeks do ... isn't it.

Context : go to Google and type in the search window "Why is Arch Linux "





I decided to install in Virtualbox to give it a try first, 4 evenings later I finally got the gnome desktop to fire up for the first time  :-[

All I am saying is after all this crap, it had better be good ........ YOU ARE NOT GOING TO BEAT ME ARCHLINUX <bangs table>

Anyway, their website needs fixing :

I recently installed Manjaro (Arch with added user-friendliness) and found it a delight to install and use. I had tried Arch, but decided it was too much hard work, whereas Manjaro has all the capability without the bother.

broadstairs:
I originally use Mandriva, then PCLinux, next Fedora and finally openSUSE. None of them were hard to install moved around mainly because of issues with update schedules, not fast enough for me in many cases. Now use openSUSE Tumbleweed which is close to bleeding edge.

Have you tried this one  :graduate: , I've tried lots of distros (in fact I still have release 1 of Linux on a floppy some where) Redhat, Suse, Ubuntu and it's variants, but this one goes great on an Intel Atom 1.6.
Command line is not so difficult to learn, but I do like the installer. No faffing around looking for drivers, this does the hard work for you.

funtoo or gentoo probably for me as I believe in compiling rather than using precompiled stuff :)

but for precompiled probably debian.

My own personal servers mostly are FreeBSD because of ZFS, although one I have installed with hardenedbsd (to get ASLR mitigation), when BTRFS is finished linux will have a comparable file system natively at which point its possible I could do a mass migration to gentoo since I rate iptables as a firewall better than the old PF in FreeBSD.
