Sync Rate Issue.
« on: February 12, 2017, 12:04:13 PM »

My first post on the forum, so i hope you will bear with me on this and maybe shed some light as to what is going on with my sync rate.

My ISP is Zen and i have had FTTC since July 2014. Up until November 2016  my sync rate  was a nice steady 75225, then on 18/11/2016 the sync dropped to 49000. Needless to say i was somewhat shocked, but did nothing about it until a few weeks ago.
I was looking through the log on my Router (Asus RT-N56U) when i noticed that the modem (HG612) had been disconnecting multiple times over a period of 3 weeks. Two weeks ago i bought a Vigor 130 modem to replace the HG612.

Once the vigor was booted up it synced straight away at 65596. Over the last 15 days the modem has been rock solid with no disconnects. The issue i have though, is why hasn't my sync rate been going back up towards 75225 where it had been for years ?
I'm hoping that some of you might be able to give me an answer to that question from the modem stats ?

The large gap between sync and attainable is due to interleaving. It artificially increases the attainable and the overheads from interleaving and FEC lower the sync.

Most likely if you were fastpath you would sync around 70mb. The roughly 5mb lost is most likely due to crosstalk. I'm not very familiar with the Vigor's stats but with a 6dB SNRM and interleaving the line has no more to give.

I am looking at this part Errored Seconds: Near end 115 Far end 9651 I take it the Near end would be the Upstream and Far end is the downstream it may help to know the uptime of the modem from those vdsl stats

Modem uptime is 369 hours as of a couple of mins ago.

Your ES numbers look fine, about 370 a day which is nothing to worry about.
You've probably lost a bit of sync to interleaving and a bit to crosstalk. If your line was interleaved before then it might all be crosstalk. Without seeing before and after stats we'll never know.

Different modems also sync at different rates. That may be the highest you can achieve with the Vigor. The HG612 may jump right above that straight away. Did you have unlocked firmware on the HG612 to view the stats? Might be worth trying it again. Remember if possible to leave 30 mins between turning 1 off and the other on so as not to upset DLM.

Yes the line was Interleaved before, the odd thing though was that for 2 years i had a steady sync at 75225. That then dropped to 49000 after a number of disconnects by the HG612. The reason i replaced it is it's my belief it's faulty.

No, the HG612 was running the stock firmware. I must admit that i am a bit reluctant to try it again, but unlocking it with a reflash is an uption now that i have the Vigor to fall back on if it all goes pear shaped lol.

It's very easy to unlock.
http://www.kitz.co.uk/routers/hg612unlock.htm

The firmware can be downloaded from here
You want the firmware bcm96368MVWG_fs_kernel_HG612V100R001C01B030SP08_webgui

Thanks for the links jOhn. I havn't made use of them yet and am sort of pleased i havn't.
I got home tonight with the intention of flashing the HG612 and using it to see what happened to my sync rate.
Before doing it though i checked my current sync rate and below is the result. On checking the customer portal at zen, the change happened at 18s past midnight last night.
Looking back now, i think the decision to replace the HG612 was the correct one. It had been loosing connection multiple times over a period of time and i'm thinking that DLM lowered my sync rate because of this.
As you can clearly see, i'm back on fast path and i'm guessing only time will tell the final sync rate.
