Can anyone recommend a trustworthy cheap VPN service for occasional use?

I use the WiTopia personalVPN service from time to time, https://www.witopia.com/. $5.99 per month for the basic service.

I've heard good things about NordVPN too. With Netflix, it's an ever moving target as they keep adding more IP addresses to their list of blacklisted IPs. The big VPN providers, as you'd imagine, get targeted first.

On another note, the trick to getting them cheap is to watch out for special offers or deals. They usually pop up during the usual times (Black Friday, Christmas, Easter and so on). I pay around $30 a year for unlimited access. Most of the top providers have clients and apps for every platform imaginable. Some of them even have clients that run on routers that run embedded OSes.

The biggest of them all, PIA, was doing a promotion a few days back for 2 years of access for just under $60.

A little bit looked and found promo code for yearly subs, what means 48$/year, coupon code "coupon70off".
Tried to enter on their site and it's still valid https://nordvpn.com/en/checkout/?Annual

I've been using AirVPN, one of the smaller providers, for about 3 years now and never had any problems. I can't really compare it to other services as I've only ever used AirVPN. Speeds are generally good when I'm connected and when testing. Just did a quick check on Thinkbroadband and got 68Mbps in the clear and 65Mbps through VPN.

They also provide a cross platform client tool (Windows/Linux/OSX) though it's easy enough to setup OpenVPN on own.

I too use AirVPN. Great service at a low cost.

Another AirVPN user here. It provides strong encryption and no logs.

I know this is an old thread but are there any further recommendations on VPN services that people are using?

I've been eyeing up NordVPN and possibly more so ExpressVPN lately for a subscription.
Ideally, I would like as much throughput as possible and the ability to watch streaming services when I'm travelling abroad really.

I recently used Express VPN for a few weeks, had to switch servers a couple times but otherwise it worked a treat for what you want.

If for when traveling abroad can you not setup a VPN back to your home network?

Ok, sounds good!
I done a bit further reading between the two I mentioned and there seems to be quite a few slow reports about Nord lately.
I've got a free trial of ExpressVPN now so I'll play about and see what if everything I want works.

As for VPN back into my home network, I did do that when I worked in Korea and I was using my Netgear D7000. I've since changed to an Edgerouter and still very unfamiliar with its workings. Plus, if it required anything doing via the CLI (most probably) then I would be lost instantly.

setting up OpenVPN on the edgerouter is fairly straight forward.

I use OpenVPN via Pfsense, in fact I'm using it now at work, and also whilst on holiday the other week.

I would need to spend a lot more playtime with the ER before I considered doing that.
I wouldn't over estimate my abilities
