Noisy line? Hoping I get back to 10ms latency
« on: January 28, 2017, 09:22:01 AM »

Hi,

I've got a new FTTC connection (now with AAISP having used Virgin for about 7-8 years before)- at one point I had a sync speed of around 56Mbps and avg. latency of 11ms but switched over the modem to a Vigor 130 and although its been more stable than the Zyxel VG1312 it has settled with a ~52Mbps sync speed and an avg 15ms latency.

I'm trying to go through the stats to figure out whether I just got lucky a few days ago and whether DLM has kicked in and this is the best I'll see. Any help understanding the stats would be greatly appreciated.

I live about 500m from the cabinet and I think the line length is around 700m (connected via poles). The internal socket is a little old (we moved here a year ago), I wanted it replaced when OR connected but they just activated the old connection and wouldn't install a new socket- just fix the old one.

Thanks!

Stats taken from telnet, line has been synced for just over 3 days (when the modem changed).

I think you will find the reason for the lost sync speed is that the Vigor 130 uses a Lantiq chipset, which is known to be less stable than a similarly equipped Broadcom chipset, such as the one in the Huawei Echolife HG612-3B. You are on a Huawei Broadcom equipped cabinet, so I would suggest if possible looking for an HG612 or a ZyXEL VMG series unit on ebay. They should give better stability and improved sync speed on the Huawei cabinet.

Hi pingles
I’m on a ECI cabinet, as a comparison to your stats my line length is approx. 350Mts to the cabinet with an attenuation of 14db but only achieving similar speeds (Lots of crosstalk on my line) your actual rate is higher than attainable and with a snr of 4 db. the chance that if you were to re start the V130 your speed would reduce. You are on fastpath with no interleaving, G.inp is active on your downstream (ReTxEnable set to 1 on Far End)
As you are connected to Huawei cabinet a Broadcom chip modem may improve your connection. I have little experience interpreting the stats there are others on this forum that will help and advice.

Just switched back to the provided Zyxel VMG1312-B10A. I turned off the Vigor 130 while I left the house for a few hours.

Having just turned it back on (its around 5pm):

Those stats look much better. You are back to a sync of around 56Mbps, and have also gained a lot more SNRM, up to around 6.4 on both, so there is slightly more headroom before you lose speed. I would leave it in place. If the issue was the wifi, you could very easily put it in modem only mode and connect it to a more powerful router.

I'm connected to a Huawei cab and had a really bad experience with a Vigor 130 as well. I only used it for 3 days and my line got permanently banded. It only cleared when I switched ISPs and a reset was performed during the migration. I would highly recommend that you stick with a Broadcom equipped modem/router if your cabinet is a Huawei.

So the connection has been stable for 18d according to MDWS (pingles on there too). Unfortunately it _looks_ like I've been banded: my attainable shows at ~58Mbps down and ~15.7Mbps up. According to MDWS I'm synced at 49000Kbps down, with interleaving at 16.

Any hope for turning the modem off for 30mins+ and then reconnecting to see if it'll jolt it back? 49Mbps speed is alright but it'd be nice to drop the interleaving back to fastpath- error seconds have been reported to be 1 or 0 per day for quite a while now.

Thanks for any advice!

I would agree that it appears that your line is banded in some form. Your current SNRM of 9dB is the main indicator of this. Low interleaving and INP levels are usually associated with the use of G.INP, which your line has, so I wouldn't be concerned about that.

The only way to get banding removed is to convince your ISP to get an Openreach technician on site to issue a DLM reset request. Be aware however, that this may incur a charge of anywhere from £120 to £180, or the technician may simply refuse to do the reset, as it is common practice to only do a DLM reset after fixing a fault.
