Browser Benchmarks Jan '17

(1/2) > >>

snadge:
I have ran various tests across four browsers, all with no programs or addons running and AV turned off, all browser are the latest versions as of 25/01/2017

notes:
* I also ran a BASEMARK bench but Opera was the only browser that could complete the test fully, i have not included the results here
* On the SunSpider test I have awarded a point for every millisecond faster than 300ms as none of the results were above that

results: (in order highest scoring first)

 - PeaceKeeper = 2580 (HTML5 = 5/7)
 - Speedometer = 45.4
 - JetStream = 218.79
 - SunSpider = 99.6ms (lower is better)
 - Octane 2.0 = 32865

There you have it folks.... but these are just benchmarks, its always down to user preference, for example; Opera came last but it definitely seems to load pages as fast as Edge and faster than Chrome and Firefox on my PC, from personal usage it would seem to me that Edge would be the best browser to use...if only it would allow add-ons, as I cant block adds or use gestures, Xmarks, LastPass etc I cant use it...this would leave Opera, as this to me is as fast as edge but has all the goodies... Chrome...then of course Firefox is definitely the slowest at loading pages IMO, everyone has different experiences.

Microsoft have proven that Edge consumes much less battery on laptops than other browsers and Chrome being the most power hungry.

tested on a Core-i5 @ 3.4Ghz with Samsung 850 EVO SSD, 1Gb nVidia GTX 650 and 8GB RAM @ 1600Mhz - no background programs running and Anti-Virus disabled. (no RAMdisk cache either)

NEXUS2345:
Personally, I feel that it is worth noting that this depends very much on your system, and what you do in your browser. I took the Octane 2 test you did and ran it between Edge, Chrome and Firefox on my machine, and have put the images below. You can see each JavaScript engine performs wildly different in each task. Chrome is better at graphics libraries like Raytrace, deltablue and Box2DWeb, while Edge is better in Garbage Collection latency and compiler latency. These will affect your web browsing habits in different ways, so it is best to look from this perspective as well.

It is also worth noting that while each browser may have its own strengths in benchmarks, some are better than others in terms of support for media (VP9 on Opera and Chrome for example), security (Opera built in VPN), and other things such as add-on support. Resource usage is a concern, and while you have said Edge is lighter on power usage, it has been shown to be a larger memory hog in comparison to Chrome (source:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AWUZDPrfOcI), so each browser, as I have stated multiple times by now, suits different tasks in different ways.

For the record, my machine is as follows: Intel Core i7 4770k 3.9Ghz, 32GB 1600Mhz DDR3 RAM, 256GB Samsung 850 Evo, Asus Nvidia GTX 1060 6GB Strix OC. For my tests, I left everything running, as this is a more realistic test environment.

Hi

thanks for your input   :)

thats why i said "but these are just benchmarks, its always down to user preference"...such as you pointed out

 - the reason for having nothing running in the background is because a background program may suddenly become active, for e.g. CCleaner monitoring, Winpatrol checks every few minutes the start up entry's, programs checking for updates etc etc, a Task may start doing something in the middle of one test and not in another, so this was to ensure a fair result all round, this would be the normal way to benchmark different software against each other, Antivirus Real-Time Shield may mar the results also - when you benchmark something you have to make sure its a 'clear testing environment' so that nothing can affect the results

edit: your results are basically the same as mine in terms of percentages difference...only higher due to your faster CPU & GPU :)

RE: Memory Hogs: I don't think many browsers aren't these days, Chrome is the worst for this but even the other day I saw Firefox using 1.5Gb of RAM with about 10 Tabs open after hours of use, as most people have Computers with plenty of RAM these days I suppose its no issue to use it, in fact RAM not used is wasted RAM!

Thanks for the further in-depth analysis of the results

Thanks again :)

Edge might have come out fastest but then it is only available if you run Windows  ;)

jaydub:
Ran Octane on our iMac and got the following scores:

Opera  29978
Chrome  28478
Firefox  28364
Safari  31253

So the best performance is from the one that I find least user friendly.
