Ariotek merges with Krystal
« on: January 25, 2017, 10:01:06 PM »

Having been with Ariotek (and very happy too) for some years now I found out tonight they are merging (their phrase) with Krystal and I will be moved over to them. Wondering if anyone here has any experience of Krystal? I had never heard of them.

The only thing I heard about them is that they have really good  customer service. I guess it's very important in that case.

So far the migration which started yesterday evening is still going and my stuff has not migrated yet. All the stuff on all Ariotek servers are being migrated to Krystal which I should think is a good few terrabytes of data. They certainly do have more support staff, and their datacentre is not far from me here in an old RAF bunker.

As to what Krystal are like I have yet to find out. One thing which is obvious is that they are more expensive and I suspect I will be moving at some stage elsewhere because their package to provide what I had at Ariotek is probably double the cost, OK it provides much more than I need but their basic package does not have enough storage. We have yet to see how this all pans out.

Well my website and email have now completed the migration to Krystal. Had one issue with a cgi script but that fixed itself  :o no idea how or why but it did, my guess would be that part of the migration process had not completed initially. Far too early to say how good their support will be but certainly my website loads noticeably faster as their stuff is hosted 100% on SSDs and they cache the most used pages in storage.

My concern was and still is that the package I've been migrated to has lower storage allowance than my site uses but so far I'm guessing that it will be OK at least while I'm still in a contract. However when renewal comes up if they require me to move up a package then my cost will double but I dont need all the package contains so I will probably move elsewhere at least for the hosting/email part, domain registration is no big deal and can stay.

I've had a few more issues with my migration to Krystal which I've resolved, mainly because some symbolic links were not reproduced when the stuff was migrated.

However today I had a more serious issue with them. I logged in to the system to manage my account and was presented with a warning message saying my disk space allocation had been exceeded. Now my contract with Ariotek gave me 2gb but the package I was moved to on Krystal only provides 1gb and they suddenly decided to enforce this today some days after migration with no warning at all. This migration was forced upon me and I expected my contract to be honoured for the remainder of its term until 1st December 2017. Once I complained they did move me to their next package up for the remainder of my contract, however suddenly enforcing these limits without warning is I believe not good practice. The new package will be probably twice as expensive than my old Ariotek one and provides for many more resources than I'll ever use or need, so I doubt very much if I'll stay once my contract is up.

I am seeing quite a few comments now which indicates that they probably don't want smaller hobby type accounts from others as well. They also took over Smarthosts at about the same time and I also believe this may be impacting them because their customer service does not seem to be as good as it was being reported.

So far less than impressed. Ariotek was in my view superb but Krystal certainly don't live up to that standard at least not right now.
