Raspberry Pi 3, query for monitoring, please..
« on: January 25, 2017, 12:07:10 PM »

Hi,

I am looking to try a pi3 for my monitoring and some other tasks to do with my solar system but on my current pc setup I have the 2 lan connections - one to the modem direct and one to internet lan side. Will the pi3  allow a similar setup of using 2 connections as in the lan port connected to the modem direct  and the wifi looking at router internet lan.

Thanks

Silly question time, why do you need to connect the PC/Pi3 to the modem directly as well as the LAN?

I dont like interfacing a non wan feed from the modem into the lan side of the router so keep it off the lan side of the router in its own network purely for the stats access. Prob not required but its just personal preference...

Don't see why not. It's just like the two interfaces on your PC. You could also use a USB to ethernet dongle to gain an additional ethernet port on the Pi 3. The performance will not be great, but it will work.

Thanks.

I tried it anyway and no problems. Lan port to modem on static  and wifi on static to router. Dslstats working fine.
Only issue I have is not being able to get an email alert working from the program. Tried both my mail providers settings but no joy yet..

Are you getting SSL errors? libssl-dev is required in that case.  :)

Yes it is. I entered the ssl details in the gui for sky but it still fails. Any help appreciated. Thanks

Try: sudo apt-get install libssl-dev

That fixed it for me.

As the author of DSLstats I ought to know the answer to this, but I'm afraid I don't. The suggestion by vic0239 has fixed it for others in the past. I don't use the feature myself, but I'll have a play with it and see if anything comes to mind.

Just a thought as your not seeing any errors

Many thanks

well I have sorted it now. I installed ssmtp and mail utils for the pi and created a basic gmail email account. I then just re-configured the alert email address and all seems well... perhaps the ssmtp install added something that may have been missing or corrupted?..

cheers all for the input..
