BTW Wholesale checker showing 18Mbps product
« on: December 15, 2016, 03:59:45 PM »

I noticed last weekend (but don't think it has been mentioned here) that the BT Wholesale checker has now started showing availability of the 18/2MB FTTC product which was being trialed by Openreach.

I am guessing it only shows as available if your estimated ADSL speeds are less than <10MB since my parents line shows it as available (they are on 55/10MB) but their estimated  ADSL 2+ speed range is estimated to be between 4-8 MB but its not offered on brothers line who in on ADSL but with an estimated ADSL 2+ speed range  of 10 to 19.5 MB.

I attach the BTWholesale estimate for a circuit connected via the same DP and PCP as that of The Cattery.

We can see that the 18/2 product is mentioned, along with FTTPoD.

Thanks - looks like a few things have changed on the latest version

Just tried it on my parents address who have adsl1 estimate of Up to 6.5    --    5.5 to 7.5
But its not showing as available for them.

If it makes any difference their VDSL estimate is 80 to 72.8

Openreach announced in October that the trial was changing - including:

Quote

  • Adding additional qualifying cabinets.
  • Increasing the availability of the offer to apply to qualifying ADSL lines speed criteria <10Mbps. This is an uplift from our current <3Mbps speed criteria.

Interested to know how they chose what cabinets to extend the trial too - I'm in London so not exactly rural and am one of the furthest properties from my cabinet though we still sync at 60MB on FTTC.

Still I guess the ultimate aim is to reduce the number if ADSL customers so imagine that is a big factor...

With such low ADSL estimates, and relatively high FTTC estimates, I would have thought the higher FTTC speeds would be more attractive to people. So less need to offer people lower speeds.

Here's mine.

I guess this helps illustrate just how cost sensitive UK consumers are re: broadband  and/or how they believe whatever speeds they currently get are sufficient for their current needs.

Or it could be that they're working towards making 18/2 available on all FTTC cabinets.

The checker updated for me... but no Yes.

I'm on an ECI cabinet. I guess this is where we get left behind on any other fttc products.

Yep ECI cabinet and 18/2 available.

Perhaps instead of offering me Infinity 2 they might offer this.

At a better price than I am paying now. ???

From the BTWholesale WBC price spreadsheet, 18/2 FTTC is £9.75 per month (ADSL2+ is £5.88 and 40/2 FTTC is £13 per month).

Openreach has a special offer price for 18/2 FTTC of £48/year for the eligible <10Mb ADSL lines on the selected cabinets.

(all ex. VAT)

How any of those prices will translate into prices the end user pays their ISP, who knows.

It's good to know that ECI cabinets are getting this.

I'm just wondering why it's not come to my cabinet. So far I can think of 2 possible reasons. It might not be any of these but here goes.

The first possibility is that they have assessed that everyone on the cabinet is getting speeds above 18/2 on their FTTC connections.

The second possibility, and one I'm going to ask you guys is, in my area every phone icon on roadworks is 99% virgin media. It's obvious to me VM in this area is really pushing hard in their coverage. There isnt a day go past without a VM icon on the map. So I'm wondering if BT's approach to offering new products will be measured by the amount of rival networks in an area?
