FTTC - Should I expect comparable UP/DOWN speeds ?
« on: December 04, 2016, 11:18:49 AM »

I know yet another one of those threads .... are my line stats okay.

Scenario thus, sister previously on PlusNet ADSLx2 and synched at circa 19/1 has now moved onto FTTC via PlusNet Unlimted Fibre Extra 80/20 Line went live on the 21/11 and has been rock solid with no disconnections since

I was surprised at the time it went live that the downspeed was only circa high 50's (especially given the very good ADSLx2 line speeds) and that the FTTC Upload has always been 20

BT Broadband Availability Checker showed thus

High Low High Low

VDSL Range A (Clean) 73.9 55.1 20 14.7

VDSL Range B (Impacted) 57 32.4 17.1 7.3

Today I briefly swapped out the (spare) ECI modem that has been used for a Draytek Vigor 130 to obtain some line stats which are shown below (note modem was only online briefly)

I am probably being simplistic but I would have thought that if we were achieving 20 up we should expect to get a comparable download speed eg nearer 73.9 .... than 60

I was wondering if a knowledgeable person could cast their eyes over the above and confirm that it would be pointless chasing PlusNet support to see if they could tweak any futher download speed on the connection.

Thanks

Others more knowledgeable than me will advise later but what I can say is that my 80/20 FTTC currently runs at 59000kbps down and 20000kbps now with an snrm of about 4.5db and attainable around 55000kbps. When I first got FTTC I could get close to 70000kbps and with G.INP around 72000kbps. So no in general a rock solid 20000 up does not mean close to maximum down. In my case I'm on and ECI cabinet which means G.INP is now off and I suspect my down speed is dropping because more folks are on FTTC on my cabinet.

I'm not a knowledgeable person when it comes to stats, but I do know it would be pointless chasing PN to tweak your download speed. There's not much they could do without getting an engineer out and if there is no problem you could be liable for a charge.

There's no point comparing what you had on ADSL to what you get on FTTC, as one is from the exchange and the other from the street cabinet. FTTC degrades much quicker over distance than ADSL does.

If you had far more detailed stats (see here) with graphs it may be possible to tell if you have any problems with the line etc.

I currently get around 50 down, but only 4.2 up (at one point I had 12 up!) and I'm 450 to 500 meters from my cabinet, it varies so much depending on quality of line, interference, crosstalk etc. They also use power masks on FTTC to protect ADSL signals, and how much these masks affect your connection depends on how far the cabinet is from the exchange.

Just a quick correction to the latter half of the above sentence --

. . . and how much those masks affect your connection depends on how far the cabinet is from the exchange.
