Welcome to the Kitz forum.

This isn't an error which I've seen before, so can I ask for more information:

What country are you in?
What operating system do you use?
What type of DSL connection do you have?
What modem are you using?
Can you say if the time between these events is consistent?

At the moment I'm unsure how a hyphen could find its way into a string of characters which is supposed to be a floating point number, and any extra information might help.

Hi Eric,

First off - bleeding amazing job, thank you.

To answer the questions :
- UK
- Windows 10
- VDSL
- Netgear D7000

I can dump the Stats if you need.

I'll try to keep an eye on the errors. I had one yesterday afternoon, one in the evening and one overnight sometime (think about 4am just before I was up).

Got to love code mysteries ... only way to keep sane :)

Thanks for that. I've been advised that you're uploading your stats to MDWS, so that's probably all the information I need. I'll put the thinking cap on.

Eric! Maybe silly to ask, but could that hyphen possibly be a minus sign?

It's not a silly question, you might be right. :)

Well, since I had those errors, not one has popped up. Strange.

Hi to both.
Just to add, I get the same error with every program version of DSLStats I have tried from early days up to the current pre-release V.5.8.6 which I have just tried today, it appears very frequently and what appears to be quite randomly to the extent that I have given up using the program and reverted back to RouterStats.
My program log shows the following two lines approx. every 4 minutes:
"Timeout while collecting bitloading data"
"Telnet timeout"
I am on ADSL2+ service
Desktop PC running Win. 8.1 64 bit
Router is a Netgear DGND3700v2

Would like to be able to use DSLStats but the very frequent appearance of this error has to date proved too distracting.
From memory with previous program versions I have tried, eventually crashes, can't remember the exact dialogue produced, it's been quite a while since I tried to run previous program versions.

For some time now I haven't 'officially' supported Netgear modems because there are so many issues of this kind, and I don't have the resources to diagnose them. I believe that Routerstats is stable because it stays logged on for the duration of the session, whereas DSLstats logs on and off with every sample. Netgear modems in particular don't seem to like the repeated logging on and off.

Hi

I hope you don't mind, and I know this is netgear but could it be that the netgear is seeing the repeated log on/off as a flood attack or similar and blocking the connection

Perhaps try whitelist the IP of the PC running dslstats

It's just a thought

Many thanks

Eric,
Many thanks for your response.
I fully appreciate that it is impossible for you to fully support every make of modem, you have done a wonderful job with the program, the features are fantastic, I would like to be able to make use of the facilities as I have always religiously monitored & recorded my line stat's. for reference, has paid off in the past when I have had minor issues.
However, I am happy with my Netgear DGND3700v2 router, very stable on my line, no plans to change in the near future.
I do have FTTC available to me but my cabinet is located about half way along the total house to exchange line distance so not ideal, would not be a big improvement over my ADSL2+ connection and at a much greater cost.
I will stick with RouterStats which works very well on my setup.

John,
Many thanks for your suggestion which I will try.
I take it that the "white listing" of my PC's IP address would be done in the router configuration ?

Regards to both,
Derek P.

Hi Dereck

Many thanks, yes I would think so but I do not use netgear, and it was just a thought

I would white list and also place a rule for in/out on telnet service for the IP address

Also, you may want to have a look through the GUI for terms like sync flood etc... and increase the values slightly

Many thanks

Hi John,
Many thanks for your further response.

I have had a good rumage through my Netgear router config., can't really see a "white list" as such, probably does exist in some form but I am beyond my cumfort zone and don't wish to upset anything as I have a very stable and trouble free ADSL2+ connection.
I think if Eric struggles with Netgear / DSLStats interface issues with his obvious level of knowledge there's really not much hope for me finding a solution.
If I was using a VDSL2 (fibre) service I would likely have more incentive to get DSLStats working on my setup, having said that, my current Netgear router does not directly support VDSL2 so would likely be using the BT Huawei HG612 box in which case that certainly works with DSLStats !

I have used RouterStats for a long time, works faultlessly on my system so will stick with that.

Regards,
Derek P.
