Broadband but no phone
« on: October 19, 2016, 11:39:23 AM »

My phone is saying "check line".

I have plugged it into the test socket and tried another phone. Same result.

But infinity bb is working fine.

So I guess the line is okay but a fault on phone exchange?

Yup, could be a fault in the Exchange, or a '1-leg disconnected' fault. The Broadband will work to a fashion down 1 leg, or 1 wire if you prefer .......... but the phone requires both wires to be intact.

The key is the broadband functionality, as the speeds will diminish somewhat.

If the amputated leg is between the cab and the exchange surely the broadband will be unaffected so you couldn't tell the difference between that and an exchange fault?

Okay - fault now cleared. Kudos to BT. :)

I did not know that BB could manage on one leg.

Correct, conversely there may have been a 1-leg dis fault between Cab and premises.

How on earth do you get a jumper in a cabinet? Is it to keep the circuits warm? No wonder things get disturbed.

Ha ha ....... believe me though, Steve ............ when you've been on BT as long as myself and others on here (Liqcuorice included), the 'jumper' joke is akin to the, 'Make sure you don't cut the wrong wire' joke from Joe Public when they see you working in a Cab.

No offence meant to you at all, bud ......... just saying.  ;D ;D

Mine was broken (probably by a BTOR engineer installing someone else's FTTC) in the cabinet recently. Took 3 days to find and fix.  :'(
But the broadband (ordinary ADSL) carried on at about 40% speed while the phone was totally dead.

It won't have actually taken 3 full days to find and fix, surely ?? There must be some serious incompetent engineers around your parts if that is so ?? Do you mean it took 3 days from reporting it to fixing it ??

And absolutely none taken - but have you ever cut the wrong wire? ::)

More than 3 days for that.
I've no idea what they did when, but the first "diagnosis" was available online via my BT account soon after reporting it and it showed as "close to my property" with a picture suggesting it was the pole opposite my house.

So they started finding the problem on Tuesday morning and it was "working" (phone available again to me) mid Friday afternoon, though it wasn't actually marked as fixed until the following week (which PlusNet confirmed to me when trying to reset the ADSL speed).
Anyway, that's not really relevant to the topic here.  ;)
