Well looking at the one I have here they simply hold the metal parts and the plastic parts together. The one through the blades is adjustable, too tight and the blades won't move, too loose and they won't cut properly.

Was not sure and didn't want to change the screw settings it does a good job after one punch down but to be sure I give it another punch down on the terminal don't know if the secondary punch weakens the connection

There are quite a few of us who will perform a double punch-down on each connection made.  :)

I did damaged the A terminal on the SSFP MK1 using one of those plastic things and the reason for purchasing a Krone Tool, the plastic thingy got stuck during push down stage on terminal and had to force it out which damaged that IDC terminal  :(

Any of the tools -- from the cheap plastic, use once, via the quality replicas, to the genuine Krone KD-1 -- will only fit one way around in an IDC. If using the Krone or replica tool, the cutters would be on the side of the IDC that has the step in its profile.

It is possible to force any of the tools into an IDC the wrong way round but damage to the tool or connector will usually result.

I enjoy watching vince's videos that one was 21 minutes long and don't like those plastic things one bit you know when a good connection has been made with the sound of clunk and the spring coiling back ready for the next termination.
