A very odd one here.
I upgraded my VMG8924 to V16 and now can't access the GUI from the PC I upgraded it from - it just comes back with 'The Connection was reset".
This is in Chrome and IE11 and is on a Win10 PC.
I also can't telnet from this PC.
Initially I panicked as I thought I'd bricked the router, but I can get to the GUI on every other device I have (both wirelessly and wired). This includes a Win10 laptop.
Internet access etc is all fine on the afflicted machine.

What I've tried so far:
1. Restart PC
2. Flush DNS cache
3. Reboot router.
4. Forced the router to allocate a different IP to the PC.
5. Added an exception for 192.168.1.1 into my anti-virus (Kaspersky).
6. Tried disabling anti-virus altogether.

This wouldn't be so bad but the PC that won't connect is my main one.

Help!  :comp:

Reading through your list, it seems as if you have tried everything that I would have suggested. So . . .

Leave the equipment alone, for now.

Tomorrow, power down the VMG8924 and disconnect it from the xDSL circuit. Then, with every other device disconnected, access the modem/router from a device that does allow a connection and, very carefully, go through each & every setting.

If that does not help, perform a factory reset and then reconfigure the modem/router from scratch.

I've had the same problem with accessing the front end and it was the Web Access Protection on my ESET AV.

In Chrome, use View, Developer, JavaScript Console and you will see some error messages.  Check the error messages out in Google nad see where that takes you.

In my case, it took me to a thread that said the issue was due to Eset (and it was).

Thanks everyone - I'll go through the things as suggested.
My suspicion is that it is Kaspersky that's doing it (even though that is also running on the Win10 laptop that does still work???).
I might also try uninstalling and reinstalling that.

My suspicion was correct (thanks jaydub) - uninstalling and reinstalling Kaspersky has fixed it.
Quite what made it have a fit I'll never know.
Next time I upgrade the router I'll do it using my Linux laptop!  :linux:

https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2017/01/antivirus-is-bad/

I've suspected this for years and only ever run Defender on all my Windows machines at home. Even at work, we have started ditching McAfee in favour of the Enterprise version of Defender (Endpoint Protection).

But yes, one big caveat is that you need to run the very latest OS, always fully patched with all software fully updated, combined with a healthy dose of common sense :)

highpriest,

Kaspersky is generally very good, but I have had strange happenings with it before.
On my HomeHub 5B parts of the GUI wouldn't work until I added an exception into the Kaspersky 'Anti Banner' settings.
I will continue with Kaspersky as a) I get it for free through my bank, and b) it gets very good protection reviews when compared to other AV products.
I am rather more prepared to put up with shortcomings in things that I haven't had to pay for. ;D

Trouble is some software these days has nasties deliberately introduced in later versions.
mostly the PUP variety and things that phone home mysteriously.
All done to "monetarise their client base" in corporate speak
I've seen several occasions where my AV has blocked an software package download....the earlier versions being fine.
Another where a suite was recommended on MSE techie forum only to find several of us with decent AV packages reported that the installercombo package contained a PUP.

More the lesson these days seems don't use anything you have not paid real money for - 'cos the rest is free for a reason and it is you that is the product.

Kaspersky also used to stop me from logging into Netgear routers, I had to disable/uninstall it to gain access. Now I just run Malwarebytes along side WD no issues at all.
