I think you go into Advanced Sharing Settings and turn on Network Discovery

I'm not sure there is anything wrong with my laptop setup because when I started I could get to the firmware flash page and once flashed I could get to the GUI. It all went wrong when I started messing with the settings on the modem.
So I would say the problem is on the modem? Or am I missing something?

I'd say it's being blocked by a firewall

Firewall is off on the laptop.
If the firewall on the modern is on it should allow LAN side http access anyway shouldn't it? I would assume it's off by default?

By default LAN connections are blocked by the modem firewall. That's basically what the unlock does - it resets the firewall

Ok here is the procedure I used to change my network from public to private. Option 1 - http://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/6815-network-location-set-private-public-windows-10-a.html#option1

When I get to step 5 and click on the Ethernet network on the right I get a text screen with the network properties and no display of our option to change the public/private setting.
Under Ethernet it's described as "unidentified network" "no internet" which is right because I'm not connected to anything.

It seems, to me, as if your problems originate with the OS being used for the unlocking & subsequent reconfiguration and not with the HG612 device.  :(

Ok, I've been trying it out and it looks like I've forgotten the magic spell to change from Public to Private.

Anyway, try this:
1. Windows key/start button
2. Settings gear-wheel
3. Network & Internet
4. Ethernet
5. Big orange square at the top next to your network name and connected
6. Make this PC discoverable on
7. Red X out.

That changes my Current Network Profile from Public to Private.

Are you saying I may be able to recover it if I flash via a Linux boot?
Send of I have flashed all my other routers, mobile phones, tablets etc. without trouble. I'm not editing any files after all.
I'll give it a go though if you think it will do any good.

I'm not saying that all BGW (Billy Gates' Ware) is problematic but it does appear that there are many more reported "mishaps" when the version number is "Ten".

One other tip. Don't rush the task. Just because one of the LEDs on the device went gone out and then re-lit, it does not mean that the step is complete.

Have you tried another ethernet cable?

And also can you confirm it's in LAN2 on the modem to the ethernet port on the PC?

I may try a Linux boot later cheers. Don't think I'm rushing it. It did ask work OK the first time I did it. It was only when I made changes through the GUI it went wrong. That's why it's like to get back to a complete flash of original firmware and settings.
