New router for Bridge mode - same modem / chipset as VMG8324
« on: August 22, 2016, 11:09:18 PM »

OK, so I am about to get dual lines operational with a load balancing router so I put my 'spare' D-Link dsl-320B on my ADSL 2+ line to release my Zyxel VMG8324 for VDSL duties

Unfortunately the D-Link is just not able to hang on to the connection and we had a lot of connection problems and drop-outs, restored the VMG8324 - problem resolved. I will need another modem - default position is another VMG8324/8924, only thing is the VMG8324 is not as easy to get hold of as 6 months ago and prices on ebay seem higher, I'll keep looking / lurking.

Obviously I don't need any of the fancy-pants routing, switch, wireless or USB capabilities of the VMG8324 / 8924 so I was wondering if any lower spec routers have the same VDSL chipset and can operate in bridge mode giving me exactly the same performance in bridge mode for less spondoolies?  This thread looks promising on the Zyxel VMG1312 - is it the same gubbins in the front-end as a VMG8324?

I think the gubbins in question is the BCM63168 and I found this list

Actiontec C1000A - looks USA only
Broadcom BCM63xx
Comtrend VG-8050
Comtrend VR-3032u
D-Link DSL-6850U
Huawei HG630
Huawei HG635 - this one is pretty cheap but appears to be TalkTalk only, wonder if it can be flashed to stock ROM, can't find it on Huawei website
Huawei HG658b/c - so is this one
Huawei HG659 b
Netgear D6400 expensive
Technicolor TG799vn V2 - cheap on ebay - any good?
SKY SR102 - Sky hub, really?  Super cheap on ebay - are they pre-hobbled?
TP-Link Archer VR900v 1.0 - expensive
ZTE ZXHN H368N
ZyXEL P8702N - huh?
ZyXEL VMG1312-B30A - promising

The holy grail here would be a crap cheap-as-chips router with low spec fripperies but with the same lubbly-jubbly modem as its rich uncles and aunties.

Yeeeeeeeehawwwww

EDIT : Just found the Wiki list, hehe

If it is any help, I have recently installed a ZyXEL VMG1312-B10D at The Cattery and it is working well on my G.992.3 (ADSL2) circuit.

Looking at the contents of its cpuinfo file I see --

BusyBox v1.20.1 (2016-06-06 11:34:28 CST) built-in shell (ash)
Enter 'help' for a list of built-in commands.

From the above we can see that it is a BCM63381 based system.

The HG635 can be used on any xDSL connection, but, it cannot be used in bridge mode for VDSL. I use one on my ADSL connection in bridge mode and I have yet to find any modem/router that comes close to it's speed and stability.

The ZyXEL VMG1312-B30A is available in the A and A shop http://aaisp.net/broadband-accessories.html for £60 inc VAT  (+p&p).

i would agree that the  ZyXEL VMG1312-B30A is probably the safest choice if you want the exact same chipset.  As you would expect I found modem performance much like the VMG8324.  The VMG1312-B10D is not so good for vds l-  slower syncs with similar error rates -  but may may well be fine with adsl.

What's the HG635 like with VDSL? I don't think I've ever used mine...

My Billion 8800NL says it is a Broadcom 63168 model, but I have no idea whether it works in a bridge mode. There are instructions online for doing so, but I can't vouch for whether they work.

I do recall that I had to /add/ a bridged interface alongside the standard PPPoE setup to get multicasting (for BT's TV) to work.

Cool, so I could pick up a cheapy for my ADSL connection and switch the VMG8324 to VDSL.

EDIT : Has anyone got a Huawei HG658 - they seem to be supplied by Vodafone - are they hobbled?

Great advice,  I'll lurk on evilbay a bit longer tho, 2 VMG8324's v tempting

8800nl works in bridge mode, I am using it as such and have a guide on here for it.

Usually at around the 90-120 day mark I have to reboot it as it seems to hang, I am over 90 days uptime now so will see how far I get this time.

That's interesting to know, Chrysalis. I'm at 86 days on my 8800NL so will see if I have the same issues as you...

I think the most economical move for me would probably have been to pick up an Huawei HG635 like this or perhaps this VMG1312 but in the end I put an offer of £40 on a brand new VMG8924 and was counter offered £55 inc P&P which I accepted.

I really like my VMG8324 so it seemed a good deal for a brand 8924 new unit, thanks all for your advice - maybe I bottled it a bit in not going for a more interesting (and cheap) option.

They will also hopefully look nice sitting next to each other  :)

Cheers big ears
