Can I get more speed?
« on: August 20, 2016, 09:59:37 PM »

I'll try and make this brief. When FTTC first came to our village, I was on it ASAP, a 40/10 package. I then went on the Plusnet trial of 80/20 but my speeds did not change - at all. I assumed this was a config issue their end and had them investigate. They found no issue and i'm still at 40/10. My line stats would suggest this is prolly correct, however...

Code: [Select]
Max:    Upstream rate = 7608 Kbps, Downstream rate = 38156 Kbps
Bearer: 0, Upstream rate = 7608 Kbps, Downstream rate = 40000 Kbps
Bearer: 1, Upstream rate = 0 Kbps, Downstream rate = 0 Kbps
ChipSet Vendor Id:      BDCM:0xa48c
ChipSet VersionNumber:  0xa48c
ChipSet SerialNumber:

                 Down            Up
SNR (dB):        5.5             6.4
Attn(dB):        24.8            0.0
Pwr(dBm):        12.4            2.4

Anyway, my modem is a HG612 connecting to a Huawei cab. I need to upgrade my wifi setup as it's become annoying so I was thinking about getting a combined modem/router.

I've seen on here the BCM63168 chipset can produce better speeds than whatever is in the HG612. if that is the case, will it help me?

I'm considering the BCM63138 equipped Netgear D7000 but wondering if I should get a Billion 8800NL to replace the HG612 and something like a WRT1900ACS instead?

...or should I just stick with the HG612? It's reliable for the most part. There was a point an few months back where it needed a reboot pretty much every night to connect. Plusnet said I needed a new modem - which I didn't believe (gut feeling) - and low and behold, it's since sorted itself out.

TIA

The Billion 8800NL will give you an extra 2 - 4 Mbps on the downstream don't expect the same for the upstream when on 40/10 service your max sync would be 39998 Kbps on the downstream you are already above this with the HG612 Bearer: 0, Upstream rate = 7608 Kbps, Downstream rate = 40000 Kbps by 2 Kbps  :D

You're syncing at 40. At best you might squeeze another couple Mbps. If you're still on the 80/20 package then I would ask them to put you back on 40/10. It's not worth the extra cost of the higher package for such a small gain.

The newer version of the Billion 8800NL uses the BCM63381 chipset, which doesn't seem to perform as well as the BCM63168

IIRC plusnet don't have a 40/10 package anymore, its 40/2. So you have to stick with the 80/20 if you want the maximum upstream speed.

Yeah I stuck with the 80/20 because it had a "pro" addon IIRC. Low contention, no traffic shaping etc. etc.

Sounds like it's prolly not really worth switching to the Billion, will just get router.

Cheers :)
