You can't turn off Cortana in the Windows 10 Anniversary Update

Quote
Microsoft made an interesting decision with Windows 10’s Anniversary Update, which is now in its final stages of development before it rolls out on August 2.

Cortana, the personal digital assistant that replaced Windows 10’s search function and taps into Bing’s servers to answer your queries with contextual awareness, no longer has an off switch.

It's almost like there trying to sweeten the deal of returning to Windows 7....

I've got to do a clean install of my iMac anyhow so I suppose I'll be putting Windows 7 on it instead.

these sort of changes are expected really, when they have a big enough userbase they happy with, windows 10 will be a slow process to an eventual locked down OS like iOS.

the update is turning into a disaster.

A well written article which concludes with the obvious that the biggest downfall of win10 is its enforced updates.

http://www.infoworld.com/article/3104389/microsoft-windows/the-case-against-windows-10-anniversary-update-grows.html

Things going wrong aside from the BSOD's and crashes is.
System restore turning itself off.
Microsoft silently only allowing a rollback for 10 days instead of 30.
Live tiles been reset.
Privacy settings been changed.
Various Group Policies that worked in pro now silently fail such as the windows update overide behaviour.  (someone on here correctly predicted this would happen).
Printer drivers been uninstalled

There is some pretty angry people out there, one such person who used group policy to disable auto updates said he was running VMs on win10 but can no longer do so because the automatic reboot kills them.

If I ever move to win10 it will be the LTS version, which is what can be considered the proper new version of windows.

I did the update successfully.

So far I noticed it changed my speaker settings back to default. So I had to reset them to stereo.

It disabled my SLI config setup with the nvidia graphics cards.

It turned off my avast anti virus program and replaced it with windows defender. I had to turn every option off in windows defender before it allowed avast to re-take control.

Printer worked, as in it printed a document I wantd. But later noticed on the computer side it was saying the printing had a problem. This might just be a blip.

Visually looking I don't like it. They moved the notification speech bubble to the far right end of the task bar, so it looks out on its own. They also streamlined the start menu option buttons to the left side in one line. I don't like that either. I liked the chunky bar.

Also the UAC warning window looks amaturish. The buttons are big with No auto selected. The UAC window looks like its come from some testing phase. Doesn't look professional.

So far thats my experience. If I get anymore I'll let you know.

P.S.

Cortana stayed off for me. It was on when I first did the update. But when I had to reboot to sort the Avast it went back to Search Windows, with no mic icon on, how I had it set before.

I had got rid of Cortana but the update re-introduced it. Go to Windows > System Apps > Windows .Microsoft.Cortanaxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx and either delete it or append it with .bak. It will barf because the process is running, go to task manager and kill the process and quickly click try again in the rename dialogue box before the process re-spawns.

I found this http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/16-windows-10-anniversary-update-issues-fix/ after Cortana was resurrected after installing the upgrade on my Win 10 VM. Scroll down to point number 12. It’s a registry edit, so probably not for everyone and may not stick.

Yeah the UAC window is massive, what the hell were they thinking.

Apparently microsoft were planning to use a compatibility check to disable broken a/v before the update, but due to "time limits" that got skipped over, hence the carnage with security software, so microsoft have moved to deadlines now for updates, that is not a good thing.

Personally didn't have many problems with this update. It reset my monitor settings in Nvidia control panel, as it reinstalled the graphics driver from what I can tell. Didn't have any anti-virus issues as I use Kaspersky and Malwarebytes. Other than that I am not too bothered about Microsoft collecting my data, as they have a much more mature privacy policy now and have never given my data to any other businesses.

Ok I just updated the other desktop comp that used to have Win7 on, now Win10. The total update took 3 hours! I noticed that windows update wanted me to install all the other updates available and reboot before it would start the updating process.

I noticed during the process it did 2 lots of 1 to 100%'s. it also at one point changed my graphic settings during the process, then corrected it later.

When I got in to windows again I had to again turn off windows defender and reboot before it would let Avast take over.

Also a curious thing when I loaded up firefox to check the sounds were working properly, it kept telling me firefox wasnt the default app. So I went to settings and went to the default page and it wouldnt let me select firefox. I could select it but it wouldnt appear in the box. Then a button popped up to set default programs. It looked like a windows 7 window. I selected firefox and looked at the settings. It appears it had given Edge authority over 2 of the file associations.. https and another. So I changed these back to firefox and saved it. This seemed to work. I went back to the default apps page and firefox was now listed as the default app for web browsing.

I also updated the laptop too. Again this took over 3 hours. I actually had to use the windows update assistant as the update didnt appear on the windows update checks. What's interesting is the laptop only has windows 10 home on. I had previously gone from Win8 to Win8.1 to Win10.

Again windows defender took over and I had to select to turn all options off and reboot.. then avast took take over.

During the update I had to select custom settings and turn off all the microsoft spying options. Hmm just thinking about this, I didn't have to do that on the old desktop comp I've mentioned. It must have retained my settings. It just loaded straight in to windows.

Apart from the 3 hour duration of this, and the update not showing up in the windows update.. those were the only annoying parts of the laptop update.

I will say that before I rebooted both computers trying to get avast working, they both had cortana fully on with the microphone symbol. But when it rebooted the settings returned to how I had them previously. So cortana for me is NOT active on any of the 3 computers I've updated.
