Suggestions for router with or without VDSL?
« on: July 15, 2016, 10:27:45 PM »

Can anyone suggest a router ideally with VDSL but works with dslstats or similar?    If nothing a recommendation  without VDSL?   Lookin for something good value but great features.

Do you know if it has a DNS option where you can assign IP addresses hostnames?

If I understand the manual I think it can called static DNS.

Can't find VPN option though.

If it was me I would check cabinet type first as that would influence my choices. Yes it costs more but having seperate modem and router is what I prefer.

Personally my 8800nl didn't get on with my eci cab. My router works just great for my vpn requirements.

Cab info here

http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/cabinet-lookup.htm#fttc_cab_info

If I was on huawei cab I would go with the billion as a modem only and let my router do the rest or zyxel (again as a modem). If I was on eci (like I am) and after many modems and modem/routers combined being tested the best for my line seems to be the zyxel . Both work for stats too.

skyeci has a point here which I didn't realise, I've only been connected to a Huawei cabinet but my Billion BiPAC 8800NL has worked very well on it. If you look at my most recent thread "Thank You Power Cut!", you'll see how stable it is under very low SNR Margin's.

Sorry to but in here, skyeci I sent you loads of messages, not sure if you're receiving them or not?

Now I must butt in: William, it's not good manners to send loads of messages to another member unless they've indicated that they actually want to engage in private conversations with you. And your message is not a response to any other message in this thread.

They do, but apparently they were busy. Also, your post could be taken as if no user wanted to communicate with me!

Anyway, back on topic...

Is your service VDSL or is that for future proofing?  Reason I ask is that DSL Stats needs to see the modem, so wouldn't be much use for a router with separate modem.

I am on an ECI cab so the 8800nl may not be the best choice.

Any suggestions for ECI cab with model number?

Thanks

a quick look on mydslwebstats shows the usual 3 suspects being used on an ECI cab to good effect

 Huawei HG612
 Billion 8800NL
 Zyxel VMG8924-B10A

I use a zyxel vmg 8324 on my eci cab . Has been much better than my previous 8800nl but I use it in bridge mode as a modem only and connect it to my rt-ac87u.

All lines behave differently so it was a lot if trial an error. I did try the vmg8924 but it just left missing minutes on mydslwebstatd. We tried everything but could not resolve it with either stats program hence why I now use the 8324 as it does not suffer the same issue. Some have had the missing minutes on the 8924 and some not.

I suppose it depends if you are happy to use seperate devices or not or if you want an all in one..

You can lookup my 8324 on mydslwebstats with username skyeci

I would advise you avoid the 8800NL with an ECI cab. Billion are struggling to find a firmware that works properly without causing high error rates. The support team seem understaffed too.

Very happy with my VMG8324 on an ECI cab.
It does have some odd GUI f/w glitches, but for the web GUI is by far one of the best Ive ever seen for a consumer based modem.
It also has full Telnet access, but tbh the GUI is so feature rich that I never have to use it (other than for DSLstats etc).

The caveat is that whilst most people do find it slightly increases their sync speed, there have been a couple of lines whereby it displays a few more errors (CRC type) over the HG612.   I myself have not had this problem and it actually works better on this line than the HG612 does.

Any other suggestions for something that works well with ECI cabs / mdws but is perhaps a bit newer? I really liked the look of 8800nl but and put of slightly with being on eci cab.  Thanks
