all the ones round here are battery driven and we do get a slight click on the line I could experiment and dash out after dark to disconnect them all  ;) only problem with that idea is it doesn't get dark here just now

I can't quite see why there would be a distinction between mains and battery powered energisers, unless the mains powered ones push some interference back up the mains.   The energisers that I've used are DC powered and if run off the mains have a separate mains power adapter.   The output to the fence is the same.

By the way I've just worked out that we have 2,125m of energised conductor on our electric fence, so no wonder it can act as a pretty good aerial.

Agreed. Either way the fence voltage is several kV.

I used to run a fence around 1500 metres, not far from the house at the closest point. Only when excess vegetation caused sparking were clicks heard on the phone line. ADSL didn't seem to be affected.

Is it a 50 Hz (mains frequency) hum?

On a telephone circuit, a 50 Hz hum is often a good indicator of an earth contact fault.

I'm no expert on this so searched for 50hz noise to listen and I can't say for sure but it is close although it is a bit quieter just now

I would expect it to be external to your premises and somewhere in the Openreach access network.
