Download sync speed issue with TalkTalk HG633
« on: June 25, 2016, 09:01:53 PM »

Hi
My ISP is TalkTalk and I have a Fibre Medium FTTC connection.

My question is this: Why is my download sync speed substantially higher when using either a Netgear D6400 or Billion 8800 compared to the supplied TalkTalk HG633? I am using an ethernet connection in all cases, not wi-fi.

My download sync speed with the HG633 is in the order of 20Mbps whereas both the Netgear D6400 and Billion 8800 both come in at around 29Mbps. The speed difference is real as the download times of large files is much quicker with either the Netgear or Billion devices.

Is it that the Netgear and Billion devices are just better devices end of story?

Thanks in advance for any explanation ...

Once the DSL cable is plugged into the modem there is a stage it go's though it's called a xDSL transformer or asymmetrical choke to block out unwanted interference, now it's just a guess but it seems some modems do better than others when it come to sync because the choke is set to harsh and others are less harsh.

Basically, in simple terms, ISP provided routers are known to be *insert word here*.

The devices are also based on chipsets from different companies:

Netgear D6400 and Billion 8800 both are Broadcom.
The HG633 is Triductor.

What works better on one line will not necessarily work better on every line, all lines are different and may have their own unique local conditions.

It is usually better to stick with a modem/router that uses the same manufacturer of chipset as your local cabinet - I guess from your post you are connected to a Huawei cabinet (Broadcom chipset) hence the Netgear and Billion perform better.
