Asus Router with Openreach Modem
« on: May 28, 2016, 01:56:09 PM »

Hello all,

I'm in need of some help please. I have FTTC using a Fritzbox router with Openreach modem; the two are connected via the LAN port on the modem to one of the LAN ports on the router, which works fine. My friend has just switched to FTTC and wants to do the same with their Asus N14U router, but the maual says you should connect the modem's LAN to the the router's WAN port - as opposed to the LAN port on my Fritzbox. That means the modem's LAN-LAN cable won't fit, but before I drive 20 miles to buy a WAN-LAN cable I just wanted to get some expert advice on why it's different and whether I'm missing something. Many thanks in advance.

er if its a DSL-N14U isn't that a combined adsl only modem router. I don't see a mention of VDSL in the product details.

Sounds like if he wants separates he will need a modem or device that works in bridge mode or modem mode  alongside a router that will support his isp. even if  you use openwrt or asus firmware the router will need to support router only mode if you want to connect it to a bt open reach modem.

If the asus router does not have a wan port its not going to work with a vdsl modem... I do not see any wan ports from the pictures on the back so it does not look like it will work with a vdsl modem.

Was he not given a modem/router from the isp to use with his vdsl service for now, if so what is it.

Has he got a device that can be used as a modem only or combined device.

Hi skyeci,

Well, I'm certain it's not got built in VDSL, but according to the manual the blue port marked adsl on the back is a 'WAN (internet) port'. Does that mean it should work with the Openreach modem?

Sorry for my ignorance!

It may say WAN port on the back as it is technically correct, but if it is a smaller connector (RJ11) then no it will not function with the OR modem. You would need to get a router which has an RJ45 based WAN port, or one which supports LAN-LAN as your Fritzbox does. Most of the other Asus routers which do not have modem functionality have an RJ45 WAN port which is perfectly usable for his needs.

Can you give us the proper model number from the back?

If its not a proper rj45 wan port its not going to work...

A lot of more modern devices have the ability to configure one of the LAN ports as an Ethernet WAN port. The firmware release notes say this feature was added in DSL-N14U firmware version 1.0.9.2.
