IE opens 50/60 pages all at once
« on: April 01, 2008, 09:16:02 PM »

On two occasions, yesterday and today, I have gone to IMDB to get some movie info and on both occasions of opening "the same" window IE6 has jumped into action opening up-to 60 blank windows.
Obviously it's not possible to close them quick enough to get out as they just got topped back up to 60 again.

The other BIG problem is that basically the mouse and keyboard functions are rendered totally useless, leaving the only option of a way out is to hard-boot the PC with operating the power re-set button.

I have SpywareBlaster running and have since run Ad-Aware and AVG and nothing untoward shows up.
So I wonder If any one has any suggestions on this please.

Phil,
You are not alone. Using IE6 myuself on one machine and it did jusat that to 51 pages when I went to M$ Updates.
No idea what it was but I did manage to get to Task Manager and stop IE processes.
I went back to Updates and it behaved as it should. So I put it down to a glitch, couldn't find anything to blame.
Reading your post now has reminded me so I tried Updates just now and no more problems. It is ruddy annoying because until it happens you cannot set about trying to sort it.
I'd be interested to hear if you have it again and find the cause.

I had this about six months ago when I first got my Vista laptop, it happened a couple of times and then stopped, no reason that I could fathom out.  Of course now I use Firefox, and that is perfectly behaved, must be a gentleman fox :P

Well I just tried it again twice, on a different PC and the same thing happened.

First of all I have to say, my BB is being pretty maxed out at the moment with UL to torrents so my internet connection is not as fast as previous or what it's capable of. But fortunately the PC is still as responsive as usual.

The fist time I lounged around the main page for a very short while before clicking on the actual page I wanted.
Then after a short while it all started to happen again, without clicking on anything.
Except this time probably for the reason above I was able to exit the net.

On the second occasion it did the same thing again but not until after this time I had opened the photo gallery to view the pictures and then clicked the red X to exit the net.
Again, probably due to the slowness of my connection I was again able to click File & Close.

On both of these occasions it only opened about 20+ pages.
And again PG2 was blinking like mad with blocking only what I consider to be the usual advertising.
However on all occasions there was a pop-up warning which I ignored.

If you or any one would like to try it the page concerned is:
Till Death Us Do Part
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0437072/maindetails link to main site only.

That is the main page for the series where nothing amiss seems to happen, the next page to select is the third link down (1969)

But on your own head be it.

Warning - while you were typing a new reply has been posted. You may wish to review your post.

edit.
It just happened again only this time when just checking the above link was working.
(Which is the same link I have used for a long time)
This time is was a hard re-boot job.

Phil,
Just tried your link (above) in both FF and IE6. It opens to a page headed Animal (2005) not Til death us do part.
But the page opened OK on both browsers. Just thinking, do you have to be registered to go onto the site?

Registration is only required if you want to leave or make comments.
Everything on this site is made from user comments I believe.

Yes that link is to Animal, just happened when I saved the link, that was the page I had open at the time.
You need to type the name of the movie into the search box.
Followed by the actual movie for 1969

Phil,
It came straight up with it:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0065105/
no problems getting to it.

Thanks Dave.
Just tried it again both from your link and also going to it as I normally would and nothing happened, except I had a casino add open in the background (as they sometimes do) even though pop-up blocker is set active.
I even turned PG2 off and that also had no effect.

Maybe trying to block the pop-up is or was the culprit as the pages were not being closed quick enough that they then stayed open causing the system to eventually lock-up.

So maybe we have to put it down to one of those annoying things that happens from time-to-time.
Especially if it was the fault of a persistent advert.

Thanks again for your assistance.

***************************************************

Just a follow-up with this problem, of which has just occurred again, but not on the exact same page.
(I'm pretty sure it's all down to adverts trying to open without any success)

What I did this time to eventually get out of it was to disconnect my internet connection, (turn off the modem) this then enabled me to either right click the group on the task bar and select close the open pages (although it did not close all of them) but then I was still able to close them one-by-one with clicking the red X to close them.
Once they were all closed the problem stopped.

At least this was a much better way rather than hard booting the PC, which could stand a chance of creating further problems.

Hi Kitz welcome back and hope you had a nice break (from us)
Is there any chance that you may have any sort of comments or recommendation's as to why this problem is happening.

It's still happening but only on the IMDB site.
On my laptop I was able to click File and Close which stopped and closed it (slow laptop)
But on my main PC's it's not possible and ends up with having to be a "Hard re-boot"

Turning off the modem did not stop it and I have run all the usual Ad-Aware, AVG AV, Ccleaner and even System Mechanic, also SpywareBlaster is also running along with PG2, but nothing untoward is ever found.

Sorry Phil - no idea

It actually happened to me a couple of weeks ago...   it didnt get to as much as 50-60 but there were about 15-20 by the time I stopped it.(via process manager).
I didnt think too much about it at the time - Its only happened the once and I just thought that IE (which never behaves well on this PC anyhow) had either flipped its lid - or perhaps it was a "pop-under ad".

 I stopped it.(via process manager).
perhaps it was a "pop-under ad"

Yes I think it is a pop-under "Casino ad" which is only being partially blocked that is causing the problem because on at least one occasion after closing IMDB there was a Casino ad still on display.
I'll have to increase IE6 pop-up blocker to a higher level and see if that stops it from happening in the future.

Unfortunately I could not even access process manager (the PC bleeped but no page showed up) , so that was a no go also.

Thanks all the same.

Sorry wasnt able to come up with anything new for you. :'(

Although I have IE on the PC I mostly only use it for checking webpages and prefer to use FF or Opera.
Like I say for some reason it doesnt seem to perform too good on this PC and seems to leak memory far too often for my liking :/
