As aforesaid:- for me, from my personal experience have a dozen or so W10 machines gives me less problems (not saying none!) that a smattering of XP, W7, W8(.1) etc. that I used to try and 'oversee'!

Yes - fully aware of the 'privacy' concerns, but as I'm a good boy I've got nothing to hide.........

this may change given microsoft have just been successfully sued for forced upgrades.

Well I have tried twice to update windows 8.1 to windows 10 using Microsofts install utility it get to about 68% on the upgrade process and then says it ran into a problem and needs to roll back wrote down the error code but have lost it.

Have not tried this clean boot suggestion that some people use to get to fully install, using Windows 8.1 pro with media center could that be reason why it stops upgrading.

Now on the forth attempt to upgrade windows 8.1 to windows 10 and tried the clean boot it fails with the same error C1900101-30018, it's odd as I upgraded this Win 8.1 to Win10 4-5 months ago and rolled it back to Win 8.1 and now it won't upgrade very strange indeed.

I consider you got 2 options.

1 - Download a win10 install iso and boot of it to install, it should detect windows and offer you an upgrade install.
2 - Or do a clean install of win10 and use the window 8 key after installation to activate.  Actually I am not sure which part of the install process the key will need to be entered.

For what its worth,   I had to reinstall windows 7 on a Dell laptop that had been upgraded to windows 10, The lady who owns it didn't like win 10 at all so I downloaded Dell recovery suite to get access to the Harddisk recovery partition (which was still intact) made 4 DVD's from recovery drive and goodbye win 10...... and thats after 3 months of use.
As long as you have the original key, there should be no problem going back. but after 29th July I think  any install, even with a captured hardware profile, will be an paid for upgrade?
I have got Win 7 and Win 10 on dual boot on my machine (had spare win 8 retail key) so I can keep my win 7 retail License.
Also had to ring MS to get win 8 key cleared for reuse!

Who knows what will happen, I think its a 50/50 if they extend this free upgrade or decide to cut it off.  If they cut if off I wouldnt be at all surprised if the offer is repeated again in the future.

It's some driver or program installed on WIN8.1 which is stopping WIN10 to fully upgrade it gets to 6% in the app & driver install section and then that's when it hits a problem wish it would tell me which program or driver is the issue  >:(

And used a USB Win10 ISO this time

I think there are going to a lot of Windows 8.1 users in the same situation were it won't upgrade to WIN10  :-\
