Telecom Italia lays 250 km of fibre per hour

Italian telco says it has rolled out fibre network to 1,100 municipalities.

Telecom Italia on Friday shared more details of its high-speed broadband rollout project, including the fact that it is currently laying hundreds of kilometres of fibre every 60 minutes.

"Thanks to the major investment plan dedicated to ultrabroadband, we are proceeding at a rate of 250 km of fibre optic cables laid on average every hour," said group chairman Giuseppe Recchi, in a statement.

Now, what is that actually saying; is it something akin to railway track-miles, which mean laying track for towns 25 miles apart on a quadrupled line is 100 track-miles? Are they talking a cable as a big bundle or the individual fibres?

They would be badly breaking the speed limit if it was one cable, as that's 156mph!

Italians---- speed limits... whaa?! Years back we stayed in Amalfi and used the local buses. Oh how they two wheeled those blind hill bends!

Hope they're actually enabling properties rather than putting fibre somewhere nearby and claiming job done.
