TP-Link TD-W9980 just as a modem?
« on: November 26, 2015, 04:30:20 PM »

Hi,

I'm looking to switch to BT Infinity.  Not keen on using the HH5 as I'm informed it won't work in bridge mode.

I assume the above TP-Link TD-9980 will work simply as a modem?  (reason for this below)

Is it simple to set up as such...

Thanks

Jon

[current setup on a different ISP is ADSL router/modem in bridge mode to two routers]

The Huawei HG612 v3B is a modem and is easily available on Ebay.

Thanks

But can you use both of the lan ports?  I thought one was not fully useable?

Cheers

You can if you unlock it and set it up as a router, but in its default locked configuration as a modem theres only one lan port you can use.

Sorry if I'm just being thick, because it was easy to set up a previous ADSL modem/router as simply a modem with 4 ports available to then attach two routers to.  Are you saying simply get a 612 and unlock it, which will give two ports to which I can attach two routers to - I still only really need a modem, but with two usable ports to attach all my existing equipment.

As I say, please forgive me, but you seem to be suggesting that the 612 now needs to be setup as a router to get both ports available...

The TP Link TD-W9980 can be configured in bridge mode as long as you set it up manually rather than using the quick setup. I can't vouch for its operation as I haven't tried it.
