TP-LINK TD-W9980 router problem
« on: November 17, 2015, 12:57:34 PM »

My ISP is PlusNet ADSL

Recently I just notice a problem where the internet light on my router is off meaning I cant access the internet. ADSL light is on though.

To fix this I have to click on the Quick setup menu option in my router and re-enter my plusnet username/password all over again to get it working. I've done this a few times!

I have the latest firmware.

I had this router months ago from march so why am I getting this problem now?

Things can go faulty after a time.

Try a complete factory reset of the router and start again.

Before I factory reset losing everything is this a common problem with this router? Anyone with the same router as me experience the same problem?

I did the factory reset but still the same problem.

I ran diagnostics on my router and the results come back as:

test ppp server connection fail

What does this mean?

That it has lost the username and password again. It is the PPP connection that uses the username and password. What do the logs show?

Interesting I have just been getting exactly the same issue and I am on fibre with plusnet, if I loose connection or reboot it syncs up with the line fine but just doesn't authenticate, I rerun quick setup and it is fine although I had to run it twice today. The quick setup does retain my username and password though!

The reason I have to reboot is I keep loosing the ability to FTP to my website, it will just stop working and rebooting fixes it!

Anyway this is the second 9980 I have had the first one started randomly locking up so Amazon sent me a replacement.

Anyhow I have e-mailed tp-link and will post the outcome.

Faulty router surely?   If it connects OK when you go in and update the username/password then that shows the service and the line appear OK.  But you have to do this every time the router's powered off and back on then the router must be "forgetting".

I always leave my router on so I don't hardly turn it off.

What can you say from this?

Also if the router is forgetting then I should see blank white field boxes next to the username and password but I don't see that. I still see my username/password saved in my router.

Do you really have to update the username/password, or just force it to reconnect? Routers usually have a reconnect button which should do the job. What I'm thinking is that the issue is not that it forgets the settings, but it simply fails to reconnect automatically. This should be a setting in the router, and maybe that setting has been lost somehow.

You could try changing the PPP authentication from Auto to whatever authentication Plusnet use (presumably CHAP). Network > WAN settings > Edit > Advance (sic) > Authentication type.

I dont need to update the username and password as they both are already filled out in the boxes. ADSL is connected but not internet so it says connected in my router so i have disconnect it then reconnect it to get it working or the method i described in the 1st post to get it working.

Once it works it will work for a day or 2 till the problem happens again.

So the issue is that the PPP connection drops and doesn't reconnect. Have you tried the suggestion which licquorice made above? You should also make sure that the PPP reconnection is set to automatic.

Ok where is the option for PPP reconnection on my router? I cant see it.

Why is this problem happening now after several months of owning the router?
